Motsko Named Eyth Teaching Chair Holder

Science department chair Andy Motsko, a 28-year member of the faculty, has added another kind of chair to his title. On February 7, he received the Howard C. "Dutch" Eyth Teaching Chair during the school's annual faculty-staff meeting in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre.

The award, one of six endowed faculty chairs, recognizes great teaching as well as commitment to the McDonogh community. It is named in memory of longtime teacher-coach and athletic director Howard C. "Dutch" Eyth.

Headmaster Charlie Britton did his best to disguise Motsko's identity as he paid tribute to him. Little by little, he revealed details:

  • Followed in his mother's footsteps when he chose a career path in education
  • Shared his version of the secrets of the universe with hundreds of kids
  • Demanding but fair-minded
  • Bases his lessons on concrete examples and demonstrations
  • Loyal fan of the Ravens and the Orioles
  • "An avid golfer known among his friends for his low handicap and a long, accurate tee shot that characterizes his game while serving as a metaphor for his character - straight and true, right on target, every time."

More and more of Motsko's colleagues could identify the honoree when Britton described Motsko as the epitome of a teacher-coach. And when he spoke of Motsko's expertise as an NCAA lacrosse official.

Motsko's educational credentials--degrees from William and Mary and Wake Forest--gave it away completely, as did the revelation that he has lived on campus for the majority of his career.

The audience was on its feet applauding when Britton finally said Motsko's name and the honoree made his way to the stage.

Motsko accepted an engraved bowl from Britton and hugs from family, friends, and colleagues. Clearly overwhelmed, he managed to extend a genuine thank-you for the warm congratulations.

Later, Motsko shared, "When Charlie finally called my name, the faculty stood up, my family all came down and Garrett jumped into my arms, it was, at the same time, one of the happiest, proudest and most humbling moments in my life. Unbelievable." He also said, "There were scores of others in that room that deserve the same recognition. I felt like I was accepting the award for all of them."

Endowed teaching chairs honor exceptional faculty members and provide endowment resources for faculty salaries. Recipients hold the designation, which includes an annual stipend, for three years. The Howard C. "Dutch" Eyth Chair was last awarded in February 2005 to history teacher Jeff Sanborn.

Current chair holders, in addition to Motsko, are Peggy Moag, Mara Daniel, Jon Aaron, Oletha DeVane, and Eileen Heady.
