Excitement in the Air at Opening Convocation

Q: What did one pencil say to the other on the first day of school?

A: Looking sharp!

New friends, new uniforms, advice on how to approach the school year, and a few corny jokes were among the highlights of Opening Convocation on Wednesday, August 31.

Excitement was in the air as prefirst and first graders walked down the hill to Childs Memorial Terrace with the Class of 2023. Before his formal remarks, Head of School Dave Farace ‘87 told a few jokes and then he set the tone for the year by speaking about the journey, the destination, and the companions along the way. He concluded, “As we launch into the new year, may we all commit to purposeful destinations, appreciate the joys and hardships of the journeys, and, in good McDonogh fashion, cultivate deep, sustaining relationships. Happy New Year to all!”

His remarks were followed by words of encouragement from the President of the Class of 2023 Katie Jones; Middle School representative Mya T. ‘27; and prefirst students Hailey H. ‘35 and Jackson J. ‘35. The Convocation ceremony concluded with the ringing of the school bell by Jon Aaron ‘72 to officially open the 2022-2023 school year. Farace noted the bell was a gift to McDonogh in the late 1980s from our sister School in Odesa, Ukraine.
