First Graders Help the Homeless

For months, McDonogh’s first grade students have been collecting sample size shampoos and soaps and doing odd jobs to earn money. Their goal was to put together winter kits for men and women who live on the streets of Baltimore. On Wednesday, February 17, the children, their teachers, and parent volunteers assembled more than 150 kits filled with the samples they collected, as well as other necessities such as warm socks purchased with the money they earned. Later that afternoon, the first grade teachers distributed the kits to people on the streets, at a rescue mission, and on the steps of Healthcare for the Homeless. Teacher Mary-Catherine Irving reported, “The kits were so very appreciated, and the men and women really took time to read the cards attached to the bags.”
