Upper School Programs

McDonogh School is committed to creating and sustaining safe spaces for students to share their common interests, exchange ideas, critically examine beliefs, and navigate difference in perspective and thought.  While some of our student clubs are formatted to be highly interactive between and among students and faculty/staff, other clubs are designed with the sole purpose of holding space exclusively for student voice and exploration. McDonogh also offers several opportunities for students to attend regional and national conferences on topics relating to equity and inclusion.

Asian American Awareness

Asian American Awareness club meetings consist of discussions around the conflicts and struggles Asian Americans face in modern day society.  Additionally, the club explores Asian culture by eating diverse Asian cuisine, celebrating holidays, student presentations of different Asian countries.  The Asian American Awareness club provides a unique opportunity for Asian Americans and other students to bond together and connect their background to the school and society by planning joint meetings with other Awareness and Culture clubs during the school year.

Campus Republicans Club is a club that provides a space for conservative thought present in the student body.  Campus Republicans Club plans to provide a place in which individuals are fully able and encouraged to express their political beliefs without fear of harassment. In doing so, the Campus Republicans Club hopes to broaden the culture of political diversity to a wider spectrum of the McDonogh community.

Chinese Culture Club

Student Leaders: Slade Caltrider, Dylan Wang

The goal of Chinese Culture Club is to educate the upper school McDonogh community about the culture of China in modern times and in Ancient China.  The club explores many aspects of Chinese life and compares the differences and similarities between today and the past’s styles. Learning about food, music, clothing, architecture, inventions, entertainment, religion and art, the Chinese culture club will go in depth on the views of Chinese life and more importantly, why it became/is the way it is. This happens through games, activities, presentations, and by trying to put ourselves in a Chinese citizens shoes.

D4M - Diversity for McDonogh

Student Leaders: Margaux Trexler, Madeleine Green, Maya Ransome, Kaleb Assefa

D4M is a club that hosts large-scale conversations, conferences, and other activities centered around diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Their spring conference and monthly Coffee and Conversations foster an environment of open participation and respectful discourse, and are an excellent forum for people to come together to discuss topical issues and how they are affected by them. D4M celebrates everyone’s opinions and their events are a great way to see an issue from someone else’s point of view. All are welcome to sit back, listen, and share in meaningful conversation.

Eagles For Action

Eagles for Action is a bi-partisan social justice and activism club that focuses on the idea that political is personal.  The goal is to make students aware of issues related to the surrounding communities, with a focus on Maryland and Baltimore.  The club hopes to connect students with local opportunities for action, and to empower students to make a change.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes

Student Leaders: Sam Thacker, Molly Blair, Caroline Insley, Nellie Blaze, Adam Lamberti, Spencer Pett, Noah Beacher
Faculty Advisor: Mr. Smoot and Mr. Hilgartner

The FCA holds morning meetings where they enjoy breakfast while discussing verses and lessons from The Bible and how they relate to everyday, busy, high school lives. It is a great place to talk and have a group of people that will always be there to provide support.

French Club

The French club is devoted to learning about and celebrating French culture, food, language, art, fashion, music, and so much more! The club offers meetings regularly to discuss themes and schedule trips to more deeply explore French culture. This club differs from other language-centric clubs because the meetings will be mostly in French, so everyone will experience French immersion, whether you speak the language or not. Even if you aren’t a French student, its guaranteed that you will have a great time in French club!

GEM - Gender Equity Movement

Student Leaders: Margaux Trexler, Lucy Resar, Evelyn Herskovits, Ava Pirie, Lacey Allee-Press

Gender Equity Movement club's aim is to promote equality for all genders, and encourage discussion and action surrounding gender equality in all aspects of life. G.E.M hosts meetings to explore current events, facilitate trips to marches in Maryland that occur during the year, and act as a resource for information and encouragement to pursue gender equality related goals.

HOLA

Student Leaders: Ben Simon, Jacob Farley, Mateo Aron-Ortiz

HOLA is a club that meets bi-weekly to discuss issues pertinent to the Hispanic/Latino population. All are welcome to come and learn about Hispanic/Latino culture and have some fun in the process! HOLA plans to host one or two interscholastic events over the course of the year in hopes of achieving the goal of increasing awareness of the issues at stake. The club also aims to establish a space where anyone at McDonogh may feel comfortable among other Hispanic or Latino students.

In Between the Lines

In Between the Lines Club is a welcoming environment for students to discuss the many intersections of race, gender, socio-economic status, and other aspects of identity in our diverse community. Meetings will spent doing activities to foster thoughtful discussions about these topics that will also connect to current events.
 

Jewish Awareness Club

Twist and Talk

Twist and Talk is a place where those in the natural hair community can discuss hair  maintenance, self care, and hot topics! In a fresh and upbeat environment, club participants will partake in art projects, trivias, games, movies, and photography. Everyone is welcome!
