General Summary

The Assistant/Associate Director assumes overall responsibility for working with their assigned students and their parents to guide them through the college search and application process. Candidates must be strong writers, good listeners, detail and deadline-oriented, and excited about working collaboratively with colleagues and students. As a member of an independent school with a five-day boarding community, the Assistant/Associate Director will also be involved in other aspects of school life.


Essential Functions

  • College Counseling Responsibilities
  • Guide students (and their parents) through academic guidance and the college process--grades 10-12
  • Coordinate Standardized Testing for AP exams and SAT, ACT, PSAT, and PreACT as needed
  • Travel and work some evenings and weekends and limited summer hours as needed
  • Organize a variety of programs for students in grades 9-12
  • Academic Advising
  • Meet and develop relationships with college admissions representatives
  • Write letters of recommendation
  • Support students with the college application process--essays and application details including interviews, supplements, and resumes
  • Professional Growth and Contributions
  • Mentoring a small group of students as an advisor in an advisory program as well as assigned counselees
  • Overtly supporting and acting in accordance with the school's mission
  • Exhibit professional standards of presentation, punctuality, professional courtesy, and discretion
  • Respond to the needs of the School, including but not limited to, service learning, advisory programs, coaching, assigned supervision, and other areas as determined by the Head of the Upper School
  • Use professional growth opportunities to continually grow as a college counselor including but not limited to, participating with NACAC, ACCIS, and College Board and visiting colleges

Recommended Employment Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.

Additional Experience

  • 3-5 years experience in selective college admission or college counseling
  • Must have familiarity with the Common Application
  • Must have knowledge of college financial aid processes
  • Must have strong computer skills (knowledge of SCOIR, Slate, social media platforms a plus)
  • Must have strong knowledge of, and experience navigating the requirements of college admissions for a large variety of institutions

  • Must be able to comply with background check, including finger prints, as required by the agency and / or state regulations.
  • Must be able to travel around the region, and to other areas of the country
  • Must be organized, self-motivated and adaptable, and have keen attention to detail skills
  • Must possess personal qualifications such as flexibility, patience, good personal hygiene, and physical and mental health that do not interfere with responsibilities

Working Conditions

Evening, weekend, and Holiday hours may be required. Lifting and carrying of equipment is not typical, but may be required on rare occasions. Lifting up to 25 pounds. Must be willing to travel as needed to represent the School. Significant computer use, including extensive close use of a computer monitor. Sitting. Standing. Walking around campus.
