This twenty-fifth anniversary retrospective of the Stewart Senior Honors Recital contains clips from the performances of 78 past Stewart Recital participants. The Stewart Senior Honors Recital was established by the Stewart family in the spring of 1993 in recognition and appreciation for McDonogh School’s outstanding program in the areas of dance, theatre, and music.

Room 208’s performance of “First in Flight“ was enjoyed by students, family, and friends. The play, written by second grade teacher Nancy Lewis, is about people who were fascinated with flight and the brave women and men who flew in the early days of aviation. Their bravery and determination is why we can all take to the skies today!

In video class this year, third grade students captured photos using photographic guidelines and editing techniques learned in class. The photos were inserted into a video, and transitions and effects were added. Students enjoyed popcorn and juice while previewing their video, “This is McDonogh!” Video class teacher Cindy Green presented each student with a poster of their photo and a video class award to highlight their accomplishments!

In this final Chapel meeting of the school year, Bridget Collins, Director of Character and Service, introduced fourth grade students who shared their letters of gratitude for McDonogh School teachers. The entire Lower School joined in singing the song “Simple Gifts,” and each Lower School teacher received a sunflower. Retiring teachers Sharon Howell and Joan Newcomer were presented with gifts from the Lower School.

Second grade students performed skits they wrote based on lessons they learned in their "Learning for Living" readings and discussions. This presentation took place in the Klein Lyceum on May 17.

On Wednesday, May 16, the Middle School Vocal classes and McDonogh Singers performed a wonderful Broadway and Pops Concert. The students, under the direction of Suzi Eldridge, sang a variety of selections from musicals including "The Greatest Showman", "Dear Evan Hanson", and "The Muppets." There were several solos performed by 8th Grade McDonogh Singers students as well.
In this delightful KinderGARDEN Bloom event presented on May 11, under the direction of Performing Arts teacher Kara Zimmerman, parents and friends were treated to music and movement by the kindergarten students.

The McDonogh Middle School Bands, under the direction of Elizabeth Irvine, performed a delightful concert on May 10, 2018. The 5th through 8th grade students performed a selection of pieces including Procession of the Heroes, Comet Ride, and Dream On by Aerosmith. The concert was well received by the audience.

On May 8, third grade students presented "Portraits of Courage," honoring voices of the Civil Rights Movement. On stage, they reenacted the story of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Following the stage performance, the audience was invited back to the classroom where the students presented dynamic scripts they wrote honoring courageous individuals in the Civil Rights Movement.

On May 8, McDonogh's Upper School Jazz and Concert Bands, under the direction of Don New, Director of Upper School Instrumental Music, delivered a wonderful evening of music with their spring concert in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. The impressive repertoire included favorites such as “Opus One” and the iconic “Bye, Bye Blackbird” by the jazz band and a James Bond compilation by the concert band. Ten graduating band members were recognized with plaques.

The McDonogh Upper School Choral Ensembles, under the direction of Philip Olsen, Head of Choral Music, performed in their annual spring concert in the Tagart Memorial Chapel on May 6. The audience was treated to outstanding performances by The Concert Choir, The Senior Singers, The Women of Note, The Gentlemen Songsters, and the Foxleigh Hill Singers. Each senior choir member received a rose.

On May 3, 2018, the Percussion students of McDonogh performed in their annual concert, the Night of Percussion. Under the direction of Mike Feathers, the Lower, Middle, and Upper School students played a wonderful concert delighting the audience to a wide selection of music including "How Far I'll Go" from Moana and "Fur Elise" by Beethoven.

McDonogh's Learning for Living Program theme of Global Citizenship exposes lower school students to the world’s different cultures and raises their global awareness in the hope that it expands their minds, and makes them more empathetic to people from all walks of life. In this "video in reverse," students learn important concepts in global citizenship.

A rainbow of artistic talent came shining through in the Lower School on Friday, April 20 during the annual Adventure with the Arts Day. Each grade level from PK to four enjoyed a Music and Movement segment, which sometimes included parent participation. Then, students and their parents went on an “Adventure with the Arts” as they strolled through the hallways of Elderkin Hall enjoying the artwork on display and proudly sharing their masterpieces.

Thank you to the McDonogh Parents Association for hosting a Cake Wars competition for our Fifth Grade students last Friday, March 23 after school. It was a fun and delicious time!
First graders used scripts written by eighth grade students in a musical presentation of “Sing! A Musical Review” held Thursday, March 8 in the Klein Lyceum. The production, based on the popular computer-animated film "Sing", follows a group of animals that enter a singing competition hosted by a koala hoping to save his theater.

Prior to winter break each year, seventh graders spend a week dedicated to learning what it means to be a global citizen. Teacher Kate Adair says, "The goal is to help students think beyond themselves and to remind them to 'never forget that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world,' to quote Margaret Mead."
The morning of December 19 was sunny and holiday spirit was everywhere on campus as students from all three divisions brought boxes of toys, books, and clothes out of buildings and into the trucks heading for St. Gregory the Great Church. The gifts will be distributed to 131 families including 377 children and Director of Character and Service Bridget Collins is thankful. "The Holiday Project requires a lot of hard work and time from the whole community, and I am grateful for your participation.
The annual Holiday Assembly on Monday, December 18, featured fabulous performances from McDonogh’s choral, dance, and instrumental ensembles as well as a wonderful story about holiday spirit told by the cast of Disney's "The Lion King."

The Middle School Bands performed their annual Winter Concert in the Horn Theater on Thursday, December 7, under the direction of Elizabeth Irvine. The concert began with some delightful songs by the Beginning Band, included some small ensemble work by the Advanced Band students, and was concluded with the Intermediate and Advanced Band students performing together. Due to technical difficulties, "Turkish March" by the Intermediate Band was not recorded.

The McDonogh Upper School Bands treated their audience to a spectacular winter concert in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on December 5. Both bands are under the direction of Don New, Director of Upper School Instrumental Music. The Concert Band opened the evening with an outstanding performance of “City of Stars” composed by Justin Hurwitz. The Jazz Band ended the evening with a swinging performance of “The Chicken” composed by Alfred Ellis.

McDonogh’s “Learning for Living” program emphasizes themes that are rooted in giving students the social and emotional skills to do the greatest amount of good. November’s theme was “Developing Empathy” with a goal to help students learn to understand and share the feelings of another or to "put oneself in someone else’s shoes."

During the week of November 13, each grade level in the Lower School devoted sessions to a particular topic regarding the concept of rights. The themes included: "Environmental Rights" (Prekindergarten); “Rights of Animals” (Kindergarten); “Rights of Self” (Prefirst); “Global Rights of Animals and Endangered Species” (First Grade); “Women’s Rights” (Second Grade); “Civil Rights” (Third Grade) and “Rights of Children Globally” (Fourth Grade).

On Friday, September 8, Lower School students were treated to summer fun on a school day. They celebrated Aquapalooza 2017, the Lower School’s reward for their summer reading challenge. The administrative team, dressed as Minions, slid down the water slides and ran through the sprinklers along with students from prekindergarten through fourth grade.
