The McDonogh Tennis Camp: Beginner

The McDonogh Tennis Beginners Camp, directed by long-time Tennis Camp staffer Ben Rabin, is designed for beginners of all ages. Conducted on our brand new 17-court facility, the program teaches players the techniques for success in this lifetime sport. Group and individual instruction will allow each player to reach his or her potential. Students will be able to set their own goals.

Instruction in injury prevention, tennis etiquette, and personal motivation will be a prominent component of the daily routine. In addition, each camper will enjoy a daily period of free swim prior to lunch.

McDonogh Golf Academy

Ages: Boys and Girls 8 to 14
Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dates: Session 1: June 18 to June 22
Dates: Session 2: July 2 to July 6 (4th of July Week)
Dates: Session 3: July 9 to July 13
Tuition: Sessions 1 and 3: $425 per session

This camp is directed by McDonogh teacher and Coach John Folfas. It is appropriate for beginners and experienced alike. We will introduce and cover the basics of the golf game in an environment that is fun, while challenging the more experienced golfer to perform at the highest level. Each golfer will have a skill level check, at the beginning of camp, so they are placed with the appropriate ability level.

Campers will learn the basic full swing, putting fundamentals, and etiquette of the game. Match play, stroke play, driving accuracy, and other various competitions will take place during the week. Other camp features include individualized long and short game instruction by a Class A PGA instructor and two rounds of golf at a local area golf course.

Each camper must have his or her own clubs and be seriously interested in learning the golf swing as well as the proper rules and etiquette necessary to be the complete golfer.


McDonogh Competitive Swim Camp

Ages: Boys and Girls 9 to 14
Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tuition: $385 per session

The McDonogh Competitive Swim Camp will take place in the Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr. Aquatic Center, in our state of the art 50 meter pool. The camp is designed for swimmers from either summer league teams or YMCA/USA swim teams. Please note that this is not a "learn-to-swim" camp, as the entire camp is run in the deep end of the competition pool.

Directed by McDonogh Head Varsity Swim Coach Scott Ward and Asst Director Clarke Nyman, the camp is designed to teach, drill, and train the individual fundamentals of competitive swimming. Specific drills will be taught to aid skill developments in all four competitive strokes, along with instruction on starts and turns. Underwater video recording and review will also be utilized in teaching the swimmers.


McDonogh Ultimate Frisbee Camp

Ages: Boys and Girls 11 to 18
Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dates: June 25 to June 29
Tuition: $250

The McDonogh Ultimate Frisbee Camp, co-sponsored by Central Maryland Ultimate Association (CMUA) and directed by head-coach Tommy Barber, is a youth ultimate camp offering ultimate frisbee skill and strategy instruction open for all ability levels, beginners through advanced. Ultimate frisbee is a fast-paced game where teams work together to move the frisbee down the field by throwing it to score in the end-zone.

Ultimate is a co-ed, no contact sport. It affords the campers an opportunity to make new friends while learning to play. Campers will review, learn, and practice the rules of the game, throwing, catching, and cutting skills, offensive and defensive drills, and play games throughout the week. They will learn to work together on the team, develop their skills, and enjoy playing this high-energy, low-equipment sport! Campers need to bring their own cleats and water bottle each day.

Ultimate Frisbee Camp Director Tommy Barber is the head-coach for the Catonsville High School Ultimate team and has been playing ultimate for 10 years on various teams including the University of Maryland Men’s team, American Hyperbole (Mixed Club), and currently 8-bit Heros (Mixed Club).

McDonogh Fencing Camp

Ages: Boys and Girls 7 to 14
Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dates: Session 1: July 9 to July 13

Tuition: $395 per session

McDonogh Fencing Camp offers instruction in the sport of fencing from beginner through advanced levels. Fencing, an Olympic and NCAA sport, is often described as a combination of boxing and chess. Each day will incorporate periods of fencing-specific instruction, drills, and bouting (sparring), as well as general physical activities, exercises, and games which enhance fencing ability and performance. Participants will learn how to stand, move, attack, and defend, as well as terminology, rules, etiquette, refereeing, and how to keep equipment in good repair. Each week will conclude with a tournament. Instruction will touch on the three fencing events (foil, saber, and epee), but the majority of instruction will be in epee.

Coach Greg Paye has been fencing for 30 years, and is the head coach and owner of Maryland Fencing Club. He is certified Prevot by the US Fencing Coaches Association, a professional member of USA Fencing, and a certified referee. His students have medaled in national tournaments and earned national standings in youth and senior age categories. His professional experience includes Johns Hopkins University, Goucher College, Boston University, DC Fencers' Club, and Boston Fencing Club.
