From the historic to the state-of-the-art, from the intimate to the spacious, McDonogh's expansive facilities support all student endeavors in the visual and performing arts.
Located in the heart of campus, the Burck Center reflects McDonogh School's commitment to arts education for all ages.
Situated on the the lower level of the Edward St. John Student Center is the spacious, open, and airy dance facility.
Considerable studio spaces locally situated in the Lower, Middle, and Upper schools provide visual artists from all three divisions with space and resources.
The Tuttle Gallery is the premiere display space for student and professional art exhibitions. Each year, the Tuttle Gallery features exhibits of original works by McDonogh students, alumni, and visiting artists whose work has been displayed nationally. Tuttle Gallery, located on the third floor of the Edward St. John Student Center, is open during school hours. The gallery holds extended hours for exhibit openings. Oletha DeVane is director and curator.
The Tuttle Gallery opened in 1980 as a memorial to Stiles Ewing Tuttle. Longtime art department head E. Carey Kenney, who passed away in 2012, was its first curator.
McDonogh's historic, non-denominational chapel is set atop peaceful Chapel Hill, overlooking the front of campus and the main drive. With its marvelous acoustics, the chapel is used as the rehearsal space for McDonogh's Upper School choral ensembles and as the performance venue for the Concert Choir's annual Winter Holiday Concert. The chapel is home to a large pipe organ, a baby grand piano, and the 48-bell carillon.
There is plenty of outdoor space available for visual and performing arts activities. The sprawling campus provides a lovely setting for visual artists on warm days. Outdoor performances have been held on Childs Memorial Terrace at the foot of Chapel Hill. The Lower School's Carpenter Outdoor Classroom, a tiered amphitheater outside Elderkin Hall, is a popular place for performances and theatre classes. The Upper School's Blumberg Outdoor Classroom outside Keelty Building is yet another venue.
