The Arts at McDonogh

Welcome to McDonogh School’s Fine & Performing Arts site! What you’ll find in the pages that follow is proof of McDonogh’s mission to find “joy in work and play.” Nowhere is this more evident than in the engaging, life-affecting experiences students at all ages have, whether working with clay, experimenting with oils, learning to tap dance, discovering their vocal range in choir, or by speaking a couplet at the end of a scene of Shakespeare. In the lower, middle, and upper schools, students have countless opportunities to engage deeply with the arts where they will learn much about the joy of artistic creation and expression. Equally important, they’ll also learn much about themselves and their place in the world around them.

At McDonogh, the arts are respected as highly as any other discipline, for the school’s liberal arts curriculum embraces the unique ways in which the visual and performing arts, in addition to their own intrinsic value, capture and shape ideas from all the major areas of study in our school. Again and again, the arts provide those “aha!” moments for students when they experience, for themselves, the interconnectedness of things.

Practically speaking, the arts at McDonogh provide laboratory environments where students explore the process of creative, imaginative, problem-solving skills at the highest levels. Collaborative activities allow students to lead and contribute to projects, giving them the opportunity to produce sophisticated art at the same time that they discover the fundamentals of leadership and character.

McDonogh School’s arts program is a leader in the area because of the school’s commitment to attracting and retaining arts faculty who are successful, working professionals in their fields and who are also passionate about teaching. We all believe the arts are essential in every child’s education, and we are committed to providing the finest, most challenging arts education in the area for each child at his or her level of development.

Thank you for taking the time to explore our site. If you have any questions about the arts at McDonogh, please do not hesitate to contact me. I’d love to hear from you.
