Welcome to the Lower School

This is where it all begins! Children come to the Lower School with a natural curiosity and a desire to learn; it is our responsibility to keep those qualities alive and growing. We seek to help our children build a strong foundation of basic skills and a sense of confidence in themselves as learners. A challenging curriculum set in a warm and nurturing environment allows children to take intellectual risks and permits them to make mistakes. With support from caring and committed teachers, our students discover and develop their own unique talents and abilities. We encourage them to take to heart the motto of the Lower School: Be the Best of Whatever You Are.

Introduction to Lower School

Children come to McDonogh with a natural curiosity, a desire to learn, and a variety of experience and background. The Lower School values these characteristics as well as the unique personality of each child. The Lower School's goal is to help each child grow toward his/her potential intellectually, artistically, physically, socially, and emotionally. An academic program that is both creative and coordinated provides the stimulation and direction necessary to challenge eager young minds. A safe and supportive environment allows children to take intellectual risks and permits them to make mistakes.

Students at each grade level, prekindergarten through four, are grouped heterogeneously into homeroom sections of approximately 16 students each. Homeroom teachers are responsible for instructing students in reading, writing, language arts, math, and social studies. Special subject teachers instruct students in science, world languages, visual arts, performing arts, physical education, and library/media.

Lower School children are integral to the McDonogh Family. A warm and joyful atmosphere fosters a sense of connectedness, encourages a spirit of belonging, and builds pride in the school community. These qualities serve to form a strong foundation for an inclusive and spirited student body.
