Orators Deliver Compelling Arguments
During the Sophomore Oratory Contest on April 5, five finalist (Anika
B., Kevin K., Pj M., Ellie S., and Jaimie Y.) delivered compelling speeches on topics ranging from feminism and diversity to the legalization of cannabis and the effects of brain injuries. The Master of Ceremonies was Scott W.
The winner and runner up will be announced at an upcoming assembly. This year's judges are Upper School history
teachers Daryl Burch and Joanne Cho and 2015 Oratory winner Makayla
L. '17.
The Sophomore Oratory Program is a highlight of spring term. Tenth
graders select and research a controversial topic and then spend weeks
developing a six-minute persuasive speech. The students deliver their
oratories during English class, and classmates select one orator to
advance to the semifinals. During the semifinal round, judges
evaluate the classroom winners on the quality of their arguments and
delivery. The five finalists and master of ceremonies are chosen from
that group.

Sarah B., Sophie G., Hanna H., Kevin K., Pj M., Jesus R., Ellie S., Katherine S., Zachary W., Scott W., and Jamie Y.
