McDonogh Remembers: Memorial Day 2016
The entire McDonogh community gathered under sunny skies at Memorial
Court
on Thursday, May 26 to observe Memorial Day and to remember and honor
McDonogh alumni who lost their lives in service to our country. The ceremony
was punctuated by solemn music performed by the Lower School Bell Choir, the
Upper School String Ensemble, and the Upper School Concert Choir.
After the invocation, which was introduced by George L. '20, Headmaster
Charlie
Britton welcomed the guests, including a handful of alumni who served in the
military. He shared childhood memories of playing “Taps” during the Memorial
Day ceremony in his small hometown and spoke about the significance of
McDonogh’s annual gathering.
Britton shared, “Today, we continue the tradition of paying the greatest
respect
to fallen members of our school. They died in far off battles in distant times, but
they remain very much a part of our community as McDonogh graduates who
gave their lives for our country. To have us all assembled here, on this day, is a
testament to the importance of the ultimate sacrifice those young men made for
our nation. Thus, McDonogh Remembers. Our community pays tribute to the
students who once walked these hallways, played on these fields, and called
McDonogh theirs.”
Director of Religious Studies, Character, and Service Bridget Collins '90 used
the
occasion to preserve the memory of John “Jack” Norris Delahay '39, a World War
II veteran who was killed in North Africa on Good Friday, April 23, 1943. After
telling the
compelling story of Jack’s short life, she reminded the students,
“As
you pass by this Memorial each day, may you always pause and say ‘thank you.’
May the gold star pin you wear over your heart be a constant reminder of the
members of our McDonogh Family who lived the words of the McDonogh motto,
‘We give something more than we take.’ May we find a renewed determination to
live so that we are worthy of their sacrifice.”
Then, Alumni Association President Michelle Mayer '91 and rising Senior
Class
President Michael A. placed a ceremonial wreath in front of the monument. After
“Taps” was played by Director of Fine and Performing Arts Kevin Costa, Lexi S.
'17 introduced the benediction, and the student body dismissed in silence.
Throughout the rest of the day, students and guests visited the Rogers
Lobby in
the Edward St. John Student Center, where military historian Butch Maisel '72
displayed World War II artifacts representing the time period of Jack Norris
Delahay’s service.
