All-School Spring Strings Concert

On April 29, 2015, the McDonogh Strings classes performed in the All School Strings concert in the Horn Theater. The performance included students from all divisions, lower school, middle school, and upper school. They were directed by Andrew Shaud.

Measure for Measure

McDonogh's Institute for Shakespeare and Renaissance Studies performed William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure on Saturday, May 30 in the Osborne Black Box Theatre.

The Wave 2015

Faculty and staff waved the buses off the lot at the end of the last full day of school for Lower and Middle School students. The students joined in the fun, waving and shouting from the bus windows!

Aloha Day Assembly for Mrs. Lidston

On May 22, Lower School students and teachers dressed in Hawaiian shirts and donned leis in honor of Noreen Lidston, who is stepping down as Lower School head after 21 years. At the culmination of the day, a surprise assembly was held in the Horn Theatre where each grade presented a special tribute to Mrs. Lidston and a video was shown. The assembly ended with everyone singing "You've Got a Friend in Me."

An Aesop's Fable: The Ants and the Grasshoppers

Second grade students in Robyn Little's class studied fables and the messages that exist in them. "The Ants and the Grasshoppers" is about making time for play after you have completed your work. In this adaptation by Robyn Little and Fang Fang Ma, the students presented a bilingual play, reciting their lines in both Chinese and English.

Memorial Day Service

AND MEMORIAL COURT REDEDICATION CEREMONY
On May 21, 2015, the school community gathered to observe Memorial Day and remember and honor McDonogh alumni who gave their lives in service to our country. This year, Memorial Court was rededicated following renovations to include the names of McDonogh Alumni who died during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Fourth Grade Poetry Slam - May 20

On May 20, the fourth grade classes of Sharon Howell and Jessica Mecca held a poetry slam in the Klein Lyceum. The poems were written and performed by their students.

Lower School Gratitude Assembly

In this final Chapel meeting of the school year, fourth graders shared letters of gratitude for McDonogh School teachers. A special banner was presented to retiree Noreen Lidston and the Lower School sang her favorite song, "Simple Gifts."

Middle School Band Spring Concert

On May 12, 2015, the McDonogh Middle School Bands presented a wonderful spring concert in the Horn Theater. The evening began with the 5th grade band performing in their first-ever concert. They were followed by a lively duet by two 7th grade saxophone students. Next, the 6th grade band performed four selections. Then the 7th and 8th grade quartets covered Beatles songs followed by 7th and 8th grade band performances.

A Night of Percussion

On May 7, 2015 Michael Feathers, Director of Percussion at McDonogh, presented A Night of Percussion. The Lower School Drum Corps, Middle School Percussion Ensembles, and Upper School Percussion Ensemble performed a variety of percussion pieces including an arrangement of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 and an arrangement of Uptown Funk.

Chuck, the Cockroach, and His Lovable Friends!

Room 208 sang and danced in the play "Chuck, the Cockroach, and His Lovable Friends." The play, written by Nancy Lewis with music by Victor Giordano, featured threatened bugs and spiders who are saved by school children.

First Graders Plant Tomatoes at Roots

Sharon Hood's first grade science class planted tomatoes at Roots with the assistance of Chef Jay from Linwoods restaurant. The students are learning how plants work together to help the garden grow.

Poetry Celebration by Room 207

Second grade students in Mary Beth Kuchno's class (Room 207) celebrated poetry with a reading of poems they created. The poetry presentations were accompanied by a series of amusing commercials written by the students.

Lower School Chorus Sings Beethoven's Wig

The Lower School Chorus under the direction of Carole Truitt, Director of Lower School Performing Arts, performed the song "Beethoven's Wig" to a delighted school community on May 8, during the Headmaster Day ceremonies.

Students in Kate Hailstone's second grade class presented "The ABC's of Roald Dahl" in the Lyceum Theatre on May 5, 2015. These talented students wrote the scripts, designed the props, decided on the acting, and were the major directors in the production.

Choral Ensembles Spring Concert 2015

The McDonogh Upper School Choral Ensembles, under the direction of Philip Olsen, presented their annual spring concert in the Tagart Memorial Chapel on May 3, 2015. The Foxleigh Hill Singers, composed of faculty, staff, alumni, and spouses participated in the program. Each senior choir member was presented with a rose.

Teaching Service Through Literature

In the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Wednesday, March 11, each third grade class presented a different play covering the theme of hunger, elders, social change, or animal protection. The plays emphasized the importance of service to effect change and make a difference.

This year’s Multicultural Night on Friday, February 27, in the Edward St. John Student Center, began with an international buffet of ethnic specialties in Paterakis Hall followed by a showcase of student performances.

Take Apart Day 2015

Fourth Grade students in the Lower School celebrated “Take Apart Day,” on Friday, February 27, 2015 by deconstructing small appliances, household gadgets, and electronics in a culmination of their science unit on Simple Machines. Working with teachers Argie O’Shea and Craig Whiteford, the students gained insight into design and mechanics.

Open A Door...Open A Heart

The theme of the Lower School Chapel on Monday, February 23, 2015 was compassion. Students signed a door which represented a promise to be more compassionate, after Bridget Collins, Director of Religious Studies, Character and Service related the story of a young man who was being bullied, but turned his life around by a simple act of kindness, opening a door for his classmates each day.

MS Onstage Winter Concert 2015

The McDonogh Middle School Onstage Ensembles performed a wonderful winter concert in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on January 27, 2015. The ensembles are under the direction of Suzi Eldridge, Director of Middle School Choral Music, and Ericka Leonard with help from Josh Waller. The students' hard work was evident throughout the performances as they sang and danced for a packed house!

The Alumni Association's annual Orange and Black Holiday Luncheon on Wednesday, December 10 featured a talk by Middle School English teacher Jon Aaron ‘72. Aaron based his "lesson," McDonogh Remembers, on the poem The McDonogh Uniform by Eustace Glascock Class of 1879.

Choral Ensembles Winter Concert 2014

The McDonogh Upper School Choral Ensembles, under the direction of Philip Olsen, Head of Choral Music, performed in their annual winter concert in the Tagart Memorial Chapel on December 13, 2014. The audience was treated to outstanding performances by The Concert Choir, The Senior Singers, The Women of Note, The Gentleman Songsters, and The Foxleigh Hill Singers.

Voices Joined in Song

For the first time ever, the Lower School Choir, led by Director of Lower School Performing Arts Carole Truitt, joined the Upper School Concert Choir, directed by Head of Choral Music Philip Olsen, in song. Together, they presented Deck the Halls with Hayden at the All-School Holiday Assembly on December 12, 2014.

All-School Holiday Assembly 2014

The annual Holiday Assembly on Friday, December 12 featured 18 performances from McDonogh’s choral, dance, and instrumental ensembles. Interspersed with the performances, were appearances by Olaf, Sven, Anna, and Elsa from "Frozen".

Upper School Bands Winter Concert

The McDonogh Upper School Jazz Band and Concert Band treated their audience to a spectacular winter concert in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on December 9, 2014. The Jazz Band opened with a swinging performance of Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing." When the Concert Band took the stage they began with Richard Saucedo's exciting "Triumphant Fanare." Both bands are under the direction of Don New, Director of Upper School Instrumental Music.

The Middle School Band, under the direction of Elizabeth Irvine, Middle School Band Director, presented a wonderful winter concert in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on December 4, 2014.

Videoclass 2015

For the 2014-2015 school year, nineteen groups of third graders, under the direction of "Videoclass" teacher Cindy Green, were assigned sections of the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. The third grade groups performed as actors to create scenes for their sections and directors to decide on filming locations and sequences. Sit back and smile as you watch this “Happy” production by the third grade.

2014 Using History for Now - Rights

During the week of November 17, 2014, each grade level in the Lower School devoted three of their Reading Workshop classes to a particular topic regarding the concept of rights. The themes focused on by each grade level included: “Rights of Living Things” (Kindergarten); “Rights of a Culture” (Prefirst); “Native American Rights” (First Grade); “Women’s Rights” (Second Grade); “Civil Rights” (Third Grade); “Children’s Rights Globally” (Fourth Grade).

Students Create Artwork for New Buildings

As part of a special project, Upper School students created permanent artwork for the Edward St. John Student Center and Naylor Building. Their creations evoke the joy of being at McDonogh, the community, and the interaction between students on all grade levels. A total of nineteen seniors and one junior took part in this innovative project.

Parade Over Bridge to Gilman

On Saturday, November 8, the McDonogh Eagles defeated the Gilman Greyhounds 21 to 14 in overtime. Prior to the game, bagpiper Adam Green '10, parade marshal Kevin Costa, Headmaster Charlie Britton, retired parade marshal Dave Harley, and the McDonogh Eagle joined students, faculty, and parents in a spirited parade over the bridge from Bryn Mawr.

Eighth Grade Students Launch Rockets

As part of the S.T.E.M. curriculum that teacher Gregg Kleiman has incorporated into his Eighth Grade science class, students successfully launched rockets in the field behind Finney Building. He comments “Overall I was very pleased with all the hard work they put into their rockets and we had many successful flights!" The students enjoyed working as teams, but also collaborated between groups, many choosing the hardest level of rocket to construct.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

The McDonogh Theatre Lab and The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company presented “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on November 1 and 2 in the Rogers Lobby of the Edward St. John Student Center. The play was presented as it would have been by a touring company in Elizabethan England. The entire space in Rogers Lobby was utilized as actors and audience moved around during the show.

Prefirst Sings At Assemblies

Students in Barbara Zimmerman’s prefirst class sang about friendship in both the Upper and Lower School assemblies on October 13. They were accompanied by Upper School students and Kara Zimmerman, music and movement teacher in the Lower School.

Kindergarten Pumpkin Picking 2014

Accompanied by Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston dressed as a scarecrow and Roots Farm Chair Sharon Hood decked in her BIG farm hat, the entire kindergarten enjoyed a hayride out to the Roots Farm to pick the pumpkins they planted this summer. Each child chose one pumpkin to take home and another for their creative cooking class where they will roast the seeds and make pumpkin bread for the bus drivers.

Jamfest 2014

A good time was had by all at the back-to-school Jamfest on Friday, September 19. The McDonogh community enjoyed a tailgate-style picnic and danced to the sounds of Retrospect.

Aquapalooza 2014

On Friday, August 29, students in the Lower School celebrated Aquapalooza as a reward for reading 3,108 books this summer. The Head of Lower School, Noreen Lidston, dressed up as Olaf, the snowman from Disney’s hit Frozen and joined the students on the water slides.

Students and faculty gathered on Childs Memorial Terrace for Convocation on Thursday, August 28. At the conclusion of the program, Mr. Britton rang the school bell to officially open the 2014-2015 school year!
