History of Giving at McDonogh School
McDonogh School was created with a gift. Ever since John McDonogh’s bequest led to the establishment of the “McDonogh Educational Fund and Institute,” members of the school community have sustained McDonogh for current and future generations.
Donors’ generosity has allowed McDonogh to remain vital and strong regardless of economic conditions. In fact, the school’s most significant building boom took place just as the Great Depression ended. Gifts paid for capital improvements then, as they do today.
Even in simpler times, the campus required improvements and repairs. Board members and school leaders sought support for capital projects as early as 1875, two years after McDonogh opened.
The school's development staff is responsible for securing capital, annual, and planned gifts to support McDonogh. Annual giving—The McDonogh Fund—is so named because these gifts are used to support the operating budget in the year they are given. Planned giving includes bequests and deferred gifts. Capital giving supports buildings (bricks and mortar) or endowment projects.
McDonogh Forever is the school's seventh capital campaign since 1972. More than $92 million has been raised in the six prior campaigns:

Objectives: Renovation of Upper School (now Kiplinger) Library; renovation of South Hall dormitory into humanities building (now Keelty Hall); new all-weather track; renovation of Lyle Building third floor into foreign language wing, The McDonogh Fund
The Campaign for McDonogh (1994-1998)
Goal $25,000,000 – Raised $28,100,000
Objectives: Faculty endowed chairs; construction of Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center, Clarence E. Burck Center for the Performing Arts (including the Ceres M. Horn Theatre); renovation of Elderkin to include two science classrooms in Lower School; renovation of Finney Building third floor from faculty apartments to Middle School classrooms and labs; The McDonogh Fund
Lower School Addition Campaign (2000-2001)
Goal - $3,000,000 – Raised $2,937,000
Objectives – Construction of six classrooms, the Boston Technology Center, the Kelly Center multipurpose room, the Carpenter Outdoor Classroom
Becoming Our Best Campaign (2004-2007)
Goal $50,000,000 – Raised $50,615,188
Objectives – endowment funding for scholarship and endowed teaching chairs; construction of five faculty homes; construction of The Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr. ’48 Aquatic Center, an 8-lane, Olympic-size pool; The McDonogh Fund
The McDonogh Forever Campaign (2010-)
Objectives – Construction of the St. John Student Center and Naylor Building for science, technology, engineering and math; campus green, fields, power plant, roads and parking; The McDonogh Fund.
