Completing the Common Application

  • Go to www.commonapp.org to complete the Common Application
  • Keep a copy of all applications and the names of the schools to which they were submitted.
  • Use your McDonogh email account
  • If you board at McDonogh, you may elect to use your home address for college correspondence.
  • Be careful when indicating a major on the Common Application since it may vary from school to school. (Note---some colleges consider your major when making admissions decisions)
  • If you plan to apply for financial aid, indicate this on the application and be certain to complete the forms required by the college.

  • If you have questions about the Family Section—ask your parents as you begin to complete the application
  • Academic Honors—note any honors you have received including Honor Roll or Dean’s List.
  • You do not have a lot of space for activities, so list in order of importance and those that you have spent the most time involved in.
  • You may add an extra sheet to explain activities or to list additional ones.
  • Short Answer—spelling and grammar count! Be sure to proofread this 150 word statement.
  • The ESSAY is an opportunity for you to tell something about your self that is not covered elsewhere in the application. Be certain that your essay is read by someone else to check for any errors and to validate the content. Be certain to list your name, date of birth, and school on each sheet of your essay.
  • Other Required Information—if you have been placed on probation or suspended from school, you must address this question honestly by answering ‘yes’ and writing a statement of explanation.
  • Do not forget to include an application fee
  • Sign the application
  • If applying Early Decision, Early Action, or Restricted Early Action you must submit the appropriate agreement form.
  • SUPPLEMENT—if your college requires a supplement you must submit it for your application to be considered complete
  • Remember to hit the SUBMIT button when you are ready to send the application. Note that you will receive confirmation when the application is sent.

Be certain to call the college or check on-line to determine that the application and supporting materials were received by the college. It is very important that you do this with each application to verify that it was received.
