First Day of School (Students)
LS Orientation Gets Kids Excited For School (Students)
Orientation and "Meacher Teacher" events brought a crowd to campus, as new and returning lower schoolers and parents visited. Among the charming moments: A father brought his yearbook along with his daughter to greet first grade teacher Ellee Thompson. He reminded Ellee that she taught him in lower school, too.
Field Hockey Harvests for Food Bank (Students)
On Thursday, August 19, the Field Hockey Team harvested tomatoes from the Roots Garden after practice. On Friday, Maryland Food Bank collected the tomatoes along with boxes of donated canned goods.
Students Make Friends and Memories in Japan (Students)
Accompanied by history teacher Dave Harley and sophomore dean Nancy Love, eight students spent two weeks of June in suburban Tokyo, Japan. Each student stayed with a Japanese host family and attended Seijo-Gakuen Senior High School with their host sibling every day, teaching English classes and learning about Japanese cultural institutions.

Baseball Open House (Athletics)
Past and present participants in McDonogh baseball got a preview recently of plans for renovation of the baseball field. With enough contributions to fund the $310,000 project, a new and improved Eyth Field could be ready for the 2011 baseball season.

Commencement (Students)
The Class of 2010 proudly processed down the hill to Childs Memorial Terrace to the applause of their teachers and received their diplomas on June 11.
Eighth Grade Closing Ceremony (Students)
Eighth graders received their certificates of completion on Monday, June 7.
Athletic Awards Evening (Students)
The 14th annual Athletic Awards Evening, held June 7 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre, celebrated nearly 100 student athletes for participation, leadership, and achievement in interscholastic sports. A record 47 seniors were recognized as Golden Eagles, which means they participated in sports every season of their upper school careers.

Stewart Senior Honors Recital (Students)
Katie F., Adam G., Megan L., Hannah M., and Jimmy R. wowed their audience on Friday, June 4 at The Stewart Senior Honors Recital. Viewers were treated to the recitalists' singing, dancing, acting, compositional, and bagpiping (yes, bagpiping!) talents.
Middle School Celebrates End of School (Students)
The Middle School celebrated the end of school outdoors with musical performances by students and games from the television show "Minute to Win It."
Two in a Row for Girls Lax (Athletics)
The girls varsity lacrosse team won their second straight championship, beating Notre Dame Prep 17-8 for the title. The girls finished with a perfect 20-0 record and the #1 ranking in the nation according to LaxPower.
Cardboard Boat Race (Students)
On Friday May 28, 2010, Upper School students gathered at the duck pond to race their self-constructed cardboard boats in a yearly tradition celebrating the end of classes.
First Grade Plants Tomatoes (Students)
Tomato and pepper plants were transplanted from brightly colored cups into the ground by first graders on Wednesday, May 26.
Bottle Rockets Lift Off (Students)
Fourth graders launched their bottle rockets into a perfect blue sky from Chapel Hill on Wednesday, May 26.
Spring Track Championships (Students)
McDonogh Girls won their seventh straight IAAM track and field championship with 215 points. The boys finished second to Gilman at the MIAA track and field championship meet. Justin G. '10 won four gold medals.
Battle of the Books Success (Students)
The annual Battle of the Books engaged middle schoolers from McDonogh and four other independent schools in a Jeopardy-style competition on Wednesday, May 12. McDonogh sent four teams, representing each grade level. The students claimed three first place banners and a second place award.
Second Grade Play (Students)
On Thursday, May 13, Mrs. Lewis's second graders took the stage of the Carpenter Outdoor Classroom for the musical production "Wassaja" about the life of Native American Carlos Montezuma, an accomplished medical doctor and Indian rights activist in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
Sixth Graders Become Experts in Everything Greek (Students)

During the final days of an integrated unit on Greek history and culture, sixth graders sampled authentic Greek cuisine and learned about the chemical and physical changes that occur during cooking, performed their own Greek plays, and participated in a triathlon.

Math Carnival Scores Big (Students)
Dressed in clothing with numbers and shapes, lower schoolers enjoyed the second annual Math Carnival on Wednesday, May 19. Students had a wonderful time playing games and participating in activities that were all about math. In true carnival fashion, the children also enjoyed cotton candy, snowballs, and lemonade. Over 100 parent volunteers helped math specialist Regina Karwacki with the event. Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston said, "The probability of Mrs. Karwacki earning an A+ for organizing this year's Math Carnival is 100%!"
Middle School Oratory (Students)
Middle schoolers gathered in Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Friday, May 14, to hear the 10 finalists in the annual seventh and eighth grade oratory program.

Roots Planting with MGP and SquashWise (Students)
Watermelon, cucumbers and gourds were planted in the community plot this past weekend, thanks to a collaborative effort from McDonogh volunteers, Baltimore Squashwise and Middle Grades Partnership. It was a wonderful day and everyone felt a huge sense of accomplishment.
Jazz Band Hits a High Note (Students)
The various jazz band ensembles treated their audience to another swinging performance on Thursday, May 6. Check out performances of Brazil, Steppin' Up, and Frankie & Johnny.
Prefirsters Stage Stone Soup (Students)
On Thursday, April 29, Barbara Zimmerman's prefirst class preformed their own version of "Stone Soup" about a group of relief workers returning home from a mission to Haiti.
Concert Band Pyro Spectacular (Students)
A spectacular fireworks display, coordinated by Band Director and licensed pyrotechnician Pete Hengen, lit up the sky above John McDonogh Stadium while the eighth grade and Upper School Bands performed a spring concert on Friday evening, May 7. The acoustic shell behind the bands featured the graffiti art of senior Ben M. Watch a video montage of the event on You Tube.
Reunion Weekend Saturday Events (Students)
Reunion Weekend activities continued Saturday, May 1 with breakfast in the lobby of Horn Theatre, five alumni games, and the Campus Master Plan Sneak Peek. Alumni and their families also took advantage of the warm, sunny day to picnic and enjoy crabs on the Rollins Quadrangle.
Reunion Weekend Friday Activities (Students)
Alums came home on April 30 to celebrate Reunion Weekend. Friday's activities included breakfast at the Bowman House hospitality suite, classroom visits, campus tours, a memorial service, and a cocktail party on the Rollins Quadrangle.
Earth Day 2010 (Students)
Students and teachers used the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22, to focus on sustainable practices, plant trees, work in the Roots garden, and save electricity.
The Mouse That Roared (Students)
The Middle School Players performed The Mouse That Roared in The Ceres M. Horn Theatre, Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24.
Young Alumni Happy Hour (Alumni)
Alumni from the classes of 1990-2005 enjoyed each other's company and the atmosphere at Lemongrass in downtown Baltimore on Thursday, April 15.
One Potato, Two Potato (Students)
About 35 volunteers planted the first crop of potatoes in the Roots garden on Saturday, April 10. After Kirk Robertson dug trenches with the tractor, volunteers spread seed potatoes every eight inches and covered them with dirt. One mom said she couldn't think of a better thing to do on her birthday!
Cum Laude Society Induction (Students)
Twenty-nine top scholars from the classes of 2010 and 2011 were inducted into McDonogh's chapter of the Cum Laude Society on Monday, April 19. Carey Winfrey '59, editor in chief of Smithsonian Magazine, was the keynote speaker.
Housekeeping Staff Honored (Students)
During the Middle School morning meeting on April 16, sixth grade students and teachers honored McDonogh’s housekeeping staff for all that they do everyday to make McDonogh a better place. They did so as part of the annual Paul T. Spies '73 Community Service Project. Following the program, the honorees were treated to a special breakfast in Lamborn Hall.
Third Grade Character Ed. Day (Students)
Third graders focused on what it means to be a good friend, good person, and good sport during Character Education Day on March 31. Guest speakers included teachers, middle schoolers, and upper schoolers.
Roots: Here's the Buzz (Students)

Here's the buzz: The McDonogh Roots bees and trees are alive! Although only one colony survived the winter, the remaining bees are active and thriving, reports theatre manager Mel Bratz. And the apple trees planted last November are starting to unfurl their leaves.

Life of Galileo Production (Students)
Bertolt Brecht's "The Life of Galileo" is a realistic portrayal of a scientific genius and telescope inventor. April 9, 10, and 11, a cast of 40 superb actors from the McDonogh Theatre Lab brought into focus the tension between religion and science in 17th century Italy. Indeed, Galileo's discoveries threatened church doctrine.
A New Season for McDonogh Roots (Students)
Kindergarten gardeners began preparing the McDonogh Roots plot for its second season. They hopped on a bus March 25 and headed to the one-acre garden, where they removed rocks and old plant material from the bed to prepare it for tilling.
Second Grade Productions (Students)
Three of the four second grade classes recently delighted audiences with their spring plays. Students in Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Robins classes performed Thirteen Colonies and Mrs. Hailstone's class presented James and the Giant Peach. Mrs. Lewis' class production will take place later this spring.
Art Projects Help the Hungry (Students)
Students in all three divisions produced 250 handcrafted ceramic bowls for the Empty Bowls Project. Art teacher Leslie Portney introduced students to the project as a way to help feed Baltimore's homeless. Students' bowls went to the St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore's annual Empty Bowls fundraiser March 20 at the College of Notre Dame. Patrons bought the bowls, and their contributions supported St. Vincent's services for the homeless.
Baltimore Alumni Luncheon (Students)
On March 10, alumni living or working in the Baltimore area enjoyed a leisurely lunch at Linwoods and heard remarks on the state of McDonogh School from Headmaster Charlie Britton.
Mr. GQ 2010 (Students)
Eleven seniors competed for the coveted title of Mr. GQ on Saturday, March 27 in the Ceres. M. Horn Theatre. Brendan F. won the crown after dazzling faculty judges with his culinary skill and nailing the final question. Kudos to emcees Olivia D. and Charlotte P. Multicultural Evening Celebration (Students)
"Celebrating Life" was the theme of this year's Multicultural Evening on Friday, March 5. The fabulous celebration included more than 20 student performances in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre, followed by a reception with entertainment and a variety of ethnic specialties in Lamborn Hall. In addition to these photos, watch highlights from the program on You Tube.
Mission Emmanuel Launch (Students)
International hero Emmanuel Yeboah returned to McDonogh on Friday, February 26 for the launch of Mission Emmanuel, an effort spearheaded by four seniors to ship a large crate of bikes and books to Ghana. Students, parents, faculty and staff brought donations to school. Lower School students staged a Parade of Bikes and participated in a Move-A-Thon and Middle Schoolers attended an assembly featuring Yeboah.
Auction for Haiti (Students)
The Upper School Leadership Class staged an auction to raise funds for Haitian earthquake relief on Monday, March 1.
February Athletic Signings (Students)
On February 24, six McDonogh seniors signed NCAA letters of intent to play Division I sports in college. Among them were two track and field athletes, a football player, and three soccer players. The schools they will attend include Virginia Tech, Rice University, University of Buffalo, University of Dayton (Ohio), University of Maryland, and North Carolina State.
Well, Well, Well Raises the Roof (Students)
This year the proceeds from the annual Middle School Well, Well, Well concert helped fund the container shipment for "Mission Emmanuel." Attendees were also encouraged to bring in bikes for donation. The show included an appearance by Emmanuel Yeboah, six middle school Rock Shop bands, guest performers, and a special Beatles set, featuring the Honors Chorus.
Faculty Art Graces The Gallery (Teachers)
Recent art work by McDonogh's talented faculty members Jon Detwiler, Oletha DeVane, Mia Halton, and Camille Quijano will be on display in the Tuttle Gallery until March 26.
Honors Choir at Disney (Students)
The MS honors choir dodged the historic February blizzards to perform at Disney World. They also attended workshops and tried out for Disney's version of American Idol.
McDonogh Dances ... Finally (Students)
Two weeks after the event was originally scheduled, McDonogh Dances actually happened. A record number of dancers--78 upper schoolers--dazzled the crowd. The snow break didn't seem to slow them down at all.
The Unseen World (Students)
What is it like to be visually impaired? To feel the keys of a Braille typewriter instead of see the keys on a computer? To navigate around a room without vision to identify obstacles? A representative from the Maryland School for the Blind invited third graders into the world of the visually impaired on February 19. Wearing masks and goggles that altered their vision, students shared the experience of those without sight.
NYC Regionals 2/4 (Alumni)
Alumni attending lunch at The Princeton Club were offered a sneak peek at McDonogh's impressive Campus Master Plan presented by Headmaster Charlie Britton, Associate Headmaster Tim Fish, and Board of Trustees Chair Mike Falcone '79. Later in the evening, New York area alumni were joined by faculty members Bridget Collins '90 and Rob Smoot '77 on for a happy hour at The World Bar. This has always been one of our most popular events, and was again this year. Thanks to all those who attended.
Boston Regional 2/3 (Alumni)

While upper schoolers lamented about the snow day that wasn't, lower schoolers enjoyed recess on Chapel Hill.
Polar Bear Plungers (Students)
Seven Upper School students braved the frigid temperatures on Saturday, January 30 to participate in the 14th annual Polar Bear Plunge at Sandy Point State Park. The adventuresome bunch took a dip in the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Maryland Special Olympics. Fifteen others supported the effort with donations. A total of $1, 220 was raised. McDonogh's team was organized through the Upper School Special Olympics Club.
All-School Art Exhibit (Tuttle Gallery)
Visitors to the January 14 All-School Art Exhibit reception enjoyed masterpieces created by students in kindergarten through tenth grade. On display were paintings, ceramic plaques, clay sculptures, wood sculptures, face collages, mixed media pieces, hanging tapestries, fantasy animals, cyanotype collages, digital stained glass and more. The exhibit is on display in the Tuttle Gallery and the Ceres M. Horn Theatre lobby until February 16.
Dress Swap (Students)
Junior girls organized a dress swap to benefit the House of Ruth. Between 250 and 300 dresses were consigned or donated. When the sale opened on January 28, shoppers found everything from beaded formals to cotton sundresses for bargain prices. Any unsold merchandise will be donated to the Priceless Gown Project.
Second City Wows Sold-Out Crowd (Students)
The comedy troupe performed before a sold-out crowd in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Friday, January 22. The group's improv-based sketch comedy kept the audience laughing for hours and served as a hilarious antidote to January doldrums.
Track Teams Sweep (Athletics)
The boys, girls, and boys JV track teams won their respective league championships at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex on January 15. Here are some post-victory shots.
Geo Bee (Students)
And victory goes to the sixth grader! Middle schoolers--one representing each social studies class in grades five through eight--competed in the annual school competition of the National Geographic Bee on Friday, January 8 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. Danny O'C from grade six won, and Geordie E. from grade eight finished second.
Miss MD Comes Home (Students)
Miss Maryland Brooke Poklemba '04 came back to campus on Monday, January 11 to talk to students about her platform on autism awareness and what it is like to be a representative for the state. She also shared memories of her time as a McDonogh student.
How We Celebrate (Students)
At today's Peace and Light Celebration, third and fourth graders shared stories of how their families observe the winter holidays. In between, they serenaded the audience with holiday music.
Boarder Holiday Dinner (Events)
Boarders and campus families enjoyed a holiday feast in Lamborn Hall on Tuesday, December 15. SAGE Dining Services outdid themselves on decorations and dinner; Rollins Fellow in the Teaching of Music, Emeritus Marshall Anders played tunes throughout; and a surprise visit by Santa and his elves provided entertainment for all.
Let There Be Peace on Earth (Students)
"And let it begin with me," sang the first and second graders on December 18 to conclude their annual Celebration of Peace and Light. The children honored classmates' diverse heritage in songs about Diwali, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas.
K and PreFirst Celebration of Peace and Light (Students)
Kindergarten and PreFirst students brought holiday joy to those who attended the annual Celebration of Peace and Light in Tagart Chapel on December 18.
Holiday Project Wraps up Nicely (Students)
Thanks to the generosity of the McDonogh family, holiday gifts for 132 families were delivered to St. Gregory the Great Church in Baltimore on December 16. Many parent volunteers were on hand to help students and teachers load the gifts into vehicles. In addition to cars and school vans, the Davis and Ward families donated trucks from their businesses to help transport the packages.
Winter Concerts a Holiday Treat (Students)
"If you missed it, you missed out!" Students, parents, and teachers raved about three recent winter concerts: the MS and US concert band, the jazz band, and the US choral groups. Performance levels were high, the repertoire impressive, and the holiday arrangements engaging. Thanks to jazz band and concert choir parents for the photos.
Prefirsters Brighten the Day at Brightwood (Students)
Prefirsters turned a science project into a holiday celebration for the residents of Brightwood Retirement Community yesterday. Wearing their best holiday smiles, the children delivered amaryllis plants they had grown, recited poetry, and sang to the seniors. After performing, the children served cookies and drinks to their new Brightwood friends and shared stories. They gave gifts they made in science class--plant books and holiday cards--along with pinecone crafts and poinsettia plants. Said science teacher Peggy Moag, "It was an amazing day. Several residents had tears of joy. I was so proud of the children!"
Holiday Assembly Goes Up! (Events)
Jonathan needed one more badge, Mr. Wallerson needed to find the holiday spirit, Dug the dog needed to find a master, and Buffe the Valley Girl needed to find accessories. On a journey filled with performances from many of McDonogh's students, a lot of corny jokes, and an appreciative audience, everyone found what they were looking for -- well, Buffe still needs some wardrobe assistance.
Alumni Holiday Luncheon (Alumni)
Alumni gathered on campus for the Annual Holiday Luncheon. Headmaster Charlie Britton gave an address and guests were entertained by the school's three a capella groups: The Women of Note, The Clef-Hangers, and The Gentlemen Songsters.
Remembering Marty McKibbin (Teachers)
Here are images of beloved teacher-coach Marty McKibbin (1927-2009) from the beginning of his career at McDonogh, in 1957. Many were collected by John Wood's AP U.S. history class on the occasion of McKibbin's retirement in 2004.
Students Plant Apple Trees (Students)
On Tuesday morning December 8, kindergartners and fifth graders planted 25 apples trees on the site of the school's original orchard next to the main drive. The new orchard is the latest McDonogh Roots project.
Holiday Bazaar (Students)
The McDonogh Parents Association sponsored Holiday Bazaar drew a big crowd on Sunday, December 6. Shopping, caroling, games, crafts, and delicious treats were enjoyed by all.
MS Idol Semifinals (Students)
On Thursday afternoon, the top twenty contestants in the Middle School Idol competition sang for a spot in the finale tonight (December 4) at 7:30 p.m. in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. Tickets are $12 at the door and proceeds will help fund the Middle School Honors Choir trip to Florida in February.
Grandparents Day Celebration (Students)
Smiles and hugs were plentiful in the Lower School on November 18 as students welcomed approximately 600 grandparents and special friends. The guests visited classrooms and enjoyed performances by the youngsters in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre.
Alum Thanksgiving Breakfast (Alumni)
Face-to-face beats Facebook. Alums from the classes of 2006 to 2009 and seniors reunited at the annual Thanksgiving breakfast in Lamborn Hall. Judging by the hugging, squealing, and leaping, alums were happy to see their former classmates. And teachers, including Mr. Abbot, Mr. Britton, Ms. Daniel, Mrs. Love, Ms. Lopata, and Ms. Tasher. Mary's pancakes were good, too.
Mingle and Munch 2009 (Students)
Sixth graders assumed the identities of famous people and the annual Mingle and Munch biography program in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre and lobby on December 2.
Blankets of Hope (Students)
During the December 1 chapel program, third graders presented 16 handmade fleece blankets and "Dreaming of Hope" books with their inspirational writings to members of the school's breast cancer support group. Their handiwork will be donated to The Red Devils, which connects breast cancer patients with support services.
Los Angeles Regional (Alumni)
Alumni from the Los Angeles-area joined Headmaster Charlie Britton at Aura Restaurant for conversation, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres on November 12. Special thanks to Brian '85 & David '89 Robinson for hosting the event.
K2 Eagles Spread Holiday Cheer (Students)
Tammy Rice's kindergarten class, better known as the K2 Eagles, is making the holidays more special for children at St. Vincent's Center in Timonium. Students gave the children goody bags for Halloween and made them cards and muffins for Thanksgiving. A highlight for the second graders was making butter to accompany the muffins.
Reception for Sculpture Exhibit (Students)
Guests enjoyed a gallery reception with award-winning artist Rachel Rotenberg on Thursday, November 19. Rotenberg creates sculptures with cedar and oil paint, and sometimes incorporates elements of metal, wire, rope, and vine to stir emotions of surprise, frustration, triumph, and delight. The exhibit will be on display in the Tuttle Gallery through December 18.
Myths and Masks (Students)
Fourth graders performed original myths and pourquoi tales for Lower School students, parents, and special guests the week before Thanksgiving. The actors and actresses wore colorful masks made from plaster molds of their own faces.
Hero Biography Day (Students)
Biography Day 2009 featured third graders as heroes, from Marco Polo to Mother Teresa. Students chose figures who demonstrated the four virtues of McDonogh's character compass: kindness, honesty, respect, and responsibility. They portrayed their heroes on stage in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on November 23.
Signing Day for Scholar Athletes (Athletics)
Ten lacrosse players and a swimmer from the Class of 2010 signed NCAA letters of intent November 10 to play Division I college sports. With parents, teachers, coaches and teammates watching, they were honored in a special ceremony in the athletic lounge.

On Saturday, November 7, McDonogh honored its newest Distinguished Service Award recipients: Betsy L. Gaines, Irvin Greif, Jr. '48, Howard S. Klein '76, Cecilia E. Millar, and Patricia G. Julius Caesar (Students)
Upper schoolers and professional actors from the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company performed "Julius Caesar" in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on November 7 and 8.
94th McDonogh/Gilman Game (Students)
Although the Eagles were not victorious (34-27) over the Greyhounds on November 7 in John McDonogh Stadium, orange and black spirit prevailed on campus throughout the day. Prior to the game, fans met in front of the Lower School for a picnic, and from there paraded in grand fashion to the stadium. Miss Maryland Brooke Poklemba '04 sang The Star-Spangled Banner before the game.
Spirit Week Highlights (Students)
The week-long celebration leading up to the 94th annual McDonogh vs. Gilman football game on November 7 included special theme days and the all-school spirit parade and pep rally.
Riding Ring Dedicated (Athletics)
The Eagle's Nest, a new 28,800 square-foot indoor riding ring, was dedicated Friday, November 6. The ceremony included project donors and guests.
MS and US Halloween (Students)
On Friday, October 30, Middle School and Upper School students and teachers weren't quite themselves!
Lower School Halloween (Students)
On Friday, October 30, Lower School students were greeted at the bus loop by Headmaster Charlie Britton, disguised as Frankenstein. Later in the day the children donned their costumes for the annual Halloween assembly and parade.
Field Hockey Wins Third Straight Title (Athletics)
The varsity field hockey team defeated Glenelg Country School on November 1, 1-0, to win its third straight IAAM B Conference title. The girls scored the winning goal in sudden-death overtime on Goucher College's turf field.
Punkin Chunkin Contest (Students)
On Friday, October 30, fourth graders simulated the annual Punkin Chunkin World Championships held in Delaware with a lesson in aim, force and trajectory on Chapel Hill.
Best Season Ever for Girls Cross Country (Athletics)
On October 28, the girls cross country team finished its best season ever, taking 2nd place in the IAAM A Conference Championship at Oregon Ridge Park after finishing the regular season at the top. Their dual-meet record was 7-0. The girls missed the championship bowl by a heartbreaking three points. They took 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and 11th place among hundreds of runners.
A Perfect Season for Girls Tennis (Students)
The girls varsity tennis team went 11-0 during the regular season and won both singles and all three doubles championship matches at the IAAM tennis tournament on October 22.
Expressing Hopes and Dreams in Art (Students)
Renowned artist Joyce Scott inspired lower, middle and upper schoolers to make Nkisi (Congolese for "spirit" or "power figure") to express their hopes and dreams. Using wood, beads, shells, fabric, and other media, Scott and the students spread out in the Horn Theatre lobby on October 21. Their nkisi took different forms, including pouches, figures, and ornaments. Completed Nkisi were tacked to a log from campus, which will remain on display in the lobby of Horn Theatre with hope that the young artists' wishes will be realized.
Fifth Grade Pirate Weeks (Students)
Fifth graders learned all about pirates in a creative interdisciplinary unit including English, reading, social studies, science, art, and music.
American Revolution Brought to Life (Students)
Seventh graders, who are studying the American Revolution, were transported back in time to 1775 with a visit from two active members of the Maryland Loyalist Batallion. Dressed in authentic uniforms, Captain White of His Majesty's Royal Provincial Army and Retired Ensign Gardner of the King's Army (father of Upper School teacher Alex Gardner), shared their perspectives on the colonial rebellion, the Acts passed by Parliament, and the importance of remaining loyal to the king. Students asked great questions and enjoyed learning about uniforms, weapons, and sentiments of the time.
Tuttle Gallery Reception (Students)
"A Life of Art," featuring watercolors by George Wills '54, will be on display in the Tuttle Gallery through November 5. A gallery reception took place on October 8.
Chicago Alumni Event (Students)
Headmaster Charlie Britton visited the Windy City on October 1 for an alumni reception. Many thanks to Gordon Kerr '61 for hosting the event at his office building, which offered a beautiful view of the Chicago River and downtown.
Race for the Cure (Students)
The rain did not keep the McDonogh community from coming out in force October 18 for the 17th annual Komen Maryland Race for the Cure. McDonogh had the largest team for the fourth year in a row.
Girls Cross Country Champs (Athletics)
The McDonogh Eagles claimed the Independent Athletic Association of Maryland dual-meet cross country championship on October 14. With a win over Maryvale, the girls ended the season at 7-0. Two runners broke the home course record, which was set in 1998. Next up for the team: the IAAM championship race on Wednesday, October 28 at Oregon Ridge Park.
McDonogh Golf Classic (Alumni)
A record 120 participants enjoyed the alumni association's annual golf tournament, held October 13 at Chestnut Ridge Country Club.
Character Compass Guides Community (Students)
At the conclusion of the Founder's Day service on October 9, each Upper School advisory group received a framed print of McDonogh's character compass, which was recently introduced to students, faculty, and staff.
Dig Pink Volleyball Event (Students)
In support of the "Dig Pink" National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally, McDonogh's volleyball teams hosted "Dig Pink" matches against Maryvale on October 7. Players, coaches, and fans were decked-out in pink for the event that included two competitive games, a pink-themed concession stand, contests, and prizes. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Side-Out Foundation in Washington D.C.
Middle School History Walk (Students)
During the afternoon on Founder's Day, students in grades 5-8 took a tour of McDonogh's campus and learned about the school's rich history from alumni stationed along the way.

The school community gathered around the John McDonogh monument on the morning of October 9 to pay tribute to our founder and other members of the McDonogh family who passed away during the past year.
Emmanuel Yeboah Visits McDonogh (Events)
Emmanuel Yeboah, the one-legged Ghanaian man whose bicycle trek across his native country has helped change the negative perceptions of the disabled in Ghana and around the world, captivated the hearts and minds of the McDonogh family with his inspirational story on October 7 and 8. Yeboah's visit was made possible by the Herbert Bearman Foundation in memory of Jill K. Bearman '88, who lost her courageous battle with cystic fibrosis in 1986.
Stream Study (Students)
On the morning of October 2, seventh graders headed out of the lab and into the waters of the Gwynn Falls stream on McDonogh's campus to collect all sorts of scientific data.
Students Bring Character Compass to Life (Students)
McDonogh's Character Compass was brought to life for Upper School students during the Honor Convocation Assembly on Thursday, October 1 through the words of five senior members of the Honor Council. Following the assembly, students and faculty signed a huge, painted canvas of the Character Compass, affirming their commitment to use the compass as a guide in upholding the Honor Code. The banner was painted by members of the theatre tech crew and will hang in the lobby of the Ceres M. Horn Theatre.
Jr. Pin Ceremony (Students)
Members of the Class of 2011 officially became upperclassmen at the Junior Pin Ceremony on Tuesday, September 29.
Activities Fair Showcases Clubs (Students)
Upper schoolers from many extracurricular clubs set up displays and recruited members during the Activities Fair on September 22. Students had a large array of choices, ranging from language and cultural clubs to service and hobby clubs.
Roots Potato Harvest (Students)
Volunteers of all ages gathered at the 1-acre McDonogh Roots garden on September 19 and 20 and harvested 4,000 pounds of potatoes. On September 22, Middle School students loaded sacks of potatoes onto a Maryland Food Bank truck. Much of the produce is being donated to charities. The rest will be used in the dining hall.
Third Graders Shine Shoes for a Cause (Students)
On September 17 and 18, third graders set up a temporary shoeshine stand to raise money for a cancer patient support project.
Rocket into Reading Celebration (Students)
On Tuesday, September 15, Lower School students rocketed down Slip N Slides and soared through "space sprinklers" to celebrate meeting their summer reading challenge "Rocket into Reading." Lower School Head Noreen Lidston, dressed as "Buzz Lidstonyear," led the way in an inflatable UFO.

Lower, middle, and upper schoolers harvested hundreds of pumpkins and tomatoes from the one-acre McDonogh Roots garden on Wednesday, September 9. Much of the produce is going to missions and food banks.

Members of the Class of 2013 got their first taste of the Upper School Wednesday at an Orientation Day. While they received valuable tours, instruction, and advice typical of an orientation, the highlights of the day were the action-packed balloon-popping relay races and games of "huggy bear" that literally had students falling over each other laughing.
Main Building Foundation Uncovered (Alumni)
Workers have uncovered the original, 1883 foundation of McDonogh's Main Building, which was destroyed by fire in 1928. Here are photos of the building before, during, and after the fire as well as what was unearthed today.
Middle Grades Partnership is Summer Success (Events)
From June 22 to July 21, McDonogh was home to sixty Mt. Royal Middle School students, participants in the Middle Grades Partnership (MGP), an educational collaboration between the two schools. These photos include class pictures, the closing ceremony, and a visit to the Roots farm.

Commencement 2009 (Events)

Seniors became alumni on Friday, June 12, a miraculously dry day during one of the wettest spring seasons on record for Baltimore. The outside ceremony on Childs Memorial Chapel was glorious.

McDonogh Roots: June 16 (Students)
The McDonogh Roots farm is flourishing! Strawberries are ready to be picked, the potato plants are in bloom, and the pumpkin vines are beginning to stretch their long arms across the beds.
Class of 2013 to U.S. (Students)
The Class of 2013 celebrated a major milestone on Monday, June 8: promotion to Upper School. The lucky class had a warm, sunny day for its closing ceremony. Emily F. reminisced with amusing class memories, while Ben L. inspired classmates to treasure what's ahead. After that, Head of Middle School Darren Ford awarded certificates to graduates, and Headmaster Charlie Britton congratulated each with a handshake.
LS Closing Ceremony (Students)
Despite the dark skies and driving rain on Friday, June 5, the fourth graders’ smiles made it plenty bright inside the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center. The annual Lower School Closing Ceremony celebrated the promotion of the Class of 2017 to Middle School. Performances by the drum corps, grade-level singing groups, and the recorder ensemble added to the festive atmosphere. After Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston offered her tribute to the 71 soon-to-be graduates, Headmaster Charlie Britton handed each a certificate. The fourth graders squirmed in their seats for a few minutes while class banners were exchanged, signifying the promotion of all lower schoolers. Then, graduates bounded out of their chairs and tossed their blazers high in the air. The basketball hoop filled quickly with blue jackets.
Athletic Awards Night (Athletics)
More than 400 upper schoolers participated in athletics and together won a record 13 championships. Students, parents, and coaches celebrated these and other 2008-2009 achievements during the Athletic Awards Night Ceremony on Monday, June 8 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. Student-athletes received honors for their commitment, fortitude, attitude, and good sportsmanship. Memorable moments included Rachel H’s performance of the “National Anthem,” students’ responses to glowing tributes from their coaches, award winners surprised to be named, and the awkwardness of posing for photos.
Stewart Recital (Students)
Bianca D., Kian F., and Kiernan M. gave beautiful performances at this year's Stewart Senior Honors Recital, Friday, June 5.
Cardboard Boat Race (Students)
The 20th annual Cardboard Boat Race on June 4 will stand out as the first ever held in the pouring rain. Nevertheless, the 10 boats provided lots of entertainment and fierce competition. PBY Catalina won the Best Overall Boat trophy. The Viking ship Jomungander claimed the Poseidon Adventure award. It sank immediately. Udder Delight disintegrated in the finals, but a clever crew member crossed the finish line as a cow shark. Competitors also included Hannah Montana, the Toga Party, Black Pearl, Star Wars, the Yellow Submarine, the Space Boat, and Sesame Street.
Championship Season (Students)
The McDonogh Eagles claimed six championships this spring season. Four varsity teams won league crowns: boys golf, boys tennis, girls lacrosse, and girls track. Two JV teams earned titles: baseball and golf.
Seventh and Eighth Grade Oratory Finals (Students)
Middle schoolers gathered in Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Friday, May 15, to hear the finalists in the annual seventh and eighth grade oratory program.
Memorial Day (Events)
The school community observed Memorial Day today, Friday, May 22, with a solemn service on Memorial Court.
Battle of the Books (Students)
McDonogh teams earned a first place and three second place awards in the annual Battle of the Books competition, which was held May 14 at Glenelg Country School.
Sixth Grade Triathlon (Students)
After weeks of training during physical education classes, sixth graders ran, swam, and biked to the finish line on Tuesday, May 19. The athletes had a choice of participating as a team member or competing on their own as an Iron Man or Iron Woman. The best part of the event was the tremendous support students showed their classmates along the way.
Edenwald Reception (Alumni)
McDonogh alumni, current teachers and retired employees met on May 15 at Edenwald retirement community, where four of McDonogh's finest faculty reside. Hugh Burgess (faculty from 1956-1995), Ray Oliver '40 (faculty from 1947-1992), Q.D. Thompson (faculty from 1947-1950 and 1953-1985), and Dick Working (faculty from 1953-1974) received hugs, accolades, and thanks from some of those whose lives they touched.
Headmaster's Day Ceremony (Students)
The entire school community came together on Friday, May 15 for the annual Headmaster's Day ceremony. More than 50 upper schoolers received awards for academic and artistic achievement, nine faculty and staff members were honored for 25 years of service to the school, and a very special tribute was made to retiring third-grade teacher Vicki McMillan. Vicki was also the recipient of the Naylor Courage Award.
To Be a Leader (Students)
Students in Nancy Lewis's second grade class performed their teacher's original play, "To Be a Leader" on May 12 and 13 in the Carpenter Outdoor Classroom. They told the story of Cesar Chavez and the California Grape Boycott.
Sophomore Oratory Contest (Students)
The finals of the 27th annual Sophomore Oratory Contest were held Wednesday, May 13 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre.
Jazz Bands Groove in Concert (Students)
The three jazz bands gave an electrifying concert on Friday, May 8 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. The repertoire included everything from Chick Corea to Metallica, with a sprinkling of Earth, Wind, and Fire. Band director Don New recognized 15 graduating band members with compliments, friendly jibes, and certificates. They, in turn, honored him with a poster-sized card and a gift.
Math Carnival Makes Learning Fun (Students)
On Tuesday, May 2, lower schoolers experienced thought-provoking fun at the first-ever McDonogh Math Carnival. Students chose from 33 different games that applied age appropriate mathematical concepts. In true carnival fashion, the children also enjoyed cotton candy, snowballs, and a pie-throwing contest. Many thanks go to math specialist Regina Karwacki for organizing the event, and the more than 100 parent volunteers and teachers who staffed booths throughout the day.
Reunion Weekend Saturday Events (Alumni)
The campus was bustling with activity on Saturday, May 2 as hundreds of graduates returned to celebrate Reunion Weekend. The day began with an alumni memorial service, followed by a state of the school address by Headmaster Charlie Britton and a piano performance by John Gardecki '59. Other highlights included alumni vs. varsity athletic games, campus tours, and the ever-popular family crab feast and picnic.

Alums came home on May 1 to celebrate Reunion Weekend. Friday's activities included breakfast at the Bowman House hospitality suite, classroom visits, campus tours, and a cocktail party on the Rollins Quadrangle.  
Seventh Grade Fast (Students)
More than 70% of seventh graders participated in a 30-hour fast on campus April 17 and 18 to benefit World Vision.
All-School Choral Concert Dazzles (Students)
The All-School Choral Concert, an every-other-year event, delighted a packed house in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Saturday, April 25. Singers from all three divisions performed as an ensemble choir. Smaller groups, from the Early Childhood Singers to the Concert Choir, took the stage, as well.
Unsung Heroes Honored (Students)

During the Middle School morning meeting on April 23, sixth grade students and teachers honored some of McDonogh’s unsung heroes, the school's administrative assistants, nurses, theatre staff, and athletic assistants. They did so as part of the annual Paul T. Spies '73 Community Service Project.

First Grade Production (Students)
"Follow Your Dreams and Make a Difference" was the title of the first grade production on April 22 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. The children sang, danced, recited poetry, and shared literature and art that was inspired by influential Americans of the twentieth century.
Roots - Tomato Seedlings (Students)
Mrs. Karwacki's math class has been measuring the growing tomato seedlings in order to chart their progress.
Mr. G.Q. Competition (Students)
Nine seniors and a junior competed for the coveted title of Mr. G. Q. 2009 on Saturday, April 18 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. Faculty judges picked Milton G. '09 as the winner. Hosts and competition directors were Jillian F. and Briana I. Proceeds will go to KIPP Ujima Village Academy.
Cum Laude Society Induction (Students)
Top scholars in the classes of 2009 and 2010 were inducted into The Cum Laude Society, an honor society modeled after Phi Beta Kappa, on April 20.
Adventure With the Arts Day (Students)
Family and friends joined Lower School students for a daylong celebration of visual and performing arts on April 17. Guests viewed artwork on display throughout the Lower School, including heritage boxes, bean collages, forsythia watercolors, self portraits with a modern art flair, and much more. By participating in an "Art Adventure" scavenger hunt, students and their guests got to see it all. They also enjoyed musical programs in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre.
Second Graders Perform Dahl Stories (Students)
Second graders in Kate Hailstone's class gave a charming and entertaining performance of two Roald Dahl stories, "The Twits" and "The Enormous Croc," on April 15 in the Black Box Theatre.
Roots - Deer Fencing (Events)
A group of volunteers came out on Good Friday to install a 7-foot tall deer fence with extra protection against burrowing creatures.
Baltimore Regional (Alumni)
Alums of all ages met at Tark's Grill in Lutherville on March 11 to socialize, network, and hear Headmaster Charlie Britton describe a vibrant, healthy McDonogh.
Roots - Potato Planting (Events)
More than 70 volunteers showed up for the first McDonogh Roots event of 2009, planting potatoes. In just a few short months, these spuds will be found in the campus dining hall, on dinner tables, and in local food banks.

New Sandbox, Endless Possibilities (Students)
Thanks to the McDonogh Parents Association, the Lower School now has a brand new sandbox that is "on par" with the level of a golf course sand trap! It didn't take long for students to dig in. On March 27, the sandbox was turned into an archaeological site for McDonogh's young paleontologists from the Sun Bears kindergarten class. The students carefully dug out bones, brushed them off, and determined which dinosaur they belonged to.
McDonogh's Got Talent (Students)
The Eighth Grade Leadership Group hosted the first Middle School Talent Show on Friday, March 27.
Florida Regionals 2009 (Alumni)
Charlie Britton enjoyed a reprieve from Baltimore's bleak winter when he joined members of the McDonogh community in West Palm Beach on February 25 and Naples on February 26.
Rooting for Rocks, Planting Tomatoes (Students)
Lower schoolers helped to advance the McDonogh Roots farm project Wednesday afternoon, March 25. First graders planted tomatoes in peat pots, while the kindergartners and prefirsters took a bus ride to the plot to remove roots and rocks. The plot will be tilled next week and potatoes planted. Prefirst Play Focuses on Character (Students)
"Abe and Harriet's Big Ideas" was the title of the Prefirst play on March 10 and 11 in the Kelly Center. Through music, movement, and conversation students explored the character of young Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman on their journey to achieve freedom for themselves and others.
Multicultural Night Celebration (Students)
"Hues of Humanity" was the theme of this year's magical Multicultural Night on March 6. The celebration included performances in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre, followed by a reception with entertainment and a variety of ethnic dishes in the dining hall. LS Hall of Courage (Students)
During the Lower School chapel gathering on Friday, February 27, first graders paid tribute to African American achievers with a program entitled "Hall of Courage." During Black History month, every first grade student researched an African American achiever and then made a doll representing that person. The dolls were featured during the chapel meeting and will be on display in the mid-level corridor of Elderkin Hall through March 13.
Character Matters Performance (Students)
"Character Matters" was the theme of a performance by second graders on February 26 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. In this fun show, the Fairy Tale Advice Counsel, led by Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Humpty Dumpty, helped folktale celebrities learn many important character-building lessons. For example, Hansel and Gretel taught the witch to be a good neighbor, the Miller's daughter gave up trying to guess Rumplestiltskin's name, the rats persuaded the Pied Piper to forgive the townspeople, and Troll learned to stop bullying Billy Goat Gruff.
American Biography Day (Students)
Third graders took the stage of the Ceres M. Horn Theatre as patriots, doctors, athletes, authors, artists, and many other inspiring Americans for Biography Day on February 19. Students entertained family and friends with songs and tales about those they portrayed.
Marshmallow and Linguine Tower Stands Tall (Students)
During Engineering Week, February 16-20, the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering invited area middle schoolers to celebrate by entering a contest to build the tallest tower, using a one pound box of linguine and two bags of marshmallows. Several groups of McDonogh students accepted the challenge and the eighth grade foursome of Andrea B., Elizabeth P., Harris R., and Claire S. tied for first place with a team from Bryn Mawr. The winning tower was 140 cm.
Celebrating 100 Days of School (Students)
Some lower schoolers celebrated their 100th day of school with special activities and a visit from Zero the Hero (a.k.a. Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston).
Love Week Highlights (Students)
During "Love Week," the sophomore SGA sold carnations, t-shirts, and True Match results, and McDonogh's a capella groups the Gentleman Songsters and the Women of Note delivered several hundred singing telegrams across campus.
Students Host Diversity Conference (Students)
On Wednesday, February 11, approximately 55 upper school students from area independent schools attended "Beyond Black and White," a conference hosted by D4M (Diversity for McDonogh). The purpose of the full-day meeting was to expand knowledge of diversity and teach participants how to lead diversity programs at their own schools.
Little Eagles Help Homeless (Students)
On Tuesday, February 10, first graders filled nearly 200 bags with personal hygiene items for homeless people in Baltimore and Westminster as part of "Little Eagles Care," an ongoing effort in the Lower School to involve students in meaningful community service projects. The children also created special Valentine's Day cards and attached them to the bags.
February Athletic Signings (Athletics)
On February 4, six McDonogh seniors signed NCAA letters of intent to play Division I sports in college. Among them were nationally recognized track and field athletes and soccer players. The schools they will attend include Maryland, Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Loyola and Miami.
Girls Swimming Champs (Students)
Competing at UMBC on February 1, the girls swim team won its seventh consecutive Independent Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship. The girls set several meet records and won by 128 points over their closest competitor.
McDonogh Dances 2009 (Students)
The Upper School Dance Ensemble gave a dazzling performance at McDonogh Dances on January 24 and 25. The show included 49 student dancers and five student technical assistants. The dance numbers were choreographed by faculty members Ilona Kessell, Dr. Efia Dalili, and Laura Plitt '02, as well as alums Kevin Truitt '08 and Sarah Levitt '03, and current students Ariel L. '10, Bianca D. '09, and Anna B. '09. Sarah Levitt was also a guest performer.
NYC 2009 (Students)
It was a packed house on January 22, 2009 when alumni from The Big Apple joined Headmaster Charlie Britton and veteran faculty Laddie Levy '63 and Mina Wender for our annual regional event.
Inauguration Day Commemoration (Students)
McDonogh students of all ages spent Inauguration Day engaged in living history. Upper schoolers watched the ceremony in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre, while lower and middle schoolers particpated in a variety of activities and viewed the historic event in their classrooms. The technology department made it possible for faculty and staff to stream video onto school computers.
All-School Art Exhibition (Students)
The All-School Art Exhibition, featuring works by students in kindergarten through grade 12, will be on display in the Tuttle Gallery and the lobby of the Ceres M. Horn Theatre until February 20. An opening reception was held on January 15. Here is a sampling of what is on display.
Middle School Geography Bee (Students)
All Middle School students gathered in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on January 9 to watch 25 of their classmates compete in the finals of McDonogh's 15th Annual Geography Bee. The anticipation and excitement was the same as it is each year, the only visible difference was that everyone was decked out in purple in support of the Ravens playoff game the next day. Each contestant secured a spot on stage by first becoming the champion in their social studies class. After an hour and a half of difficult questions and impressive answers, eighth grader Josh V. was declared the winner.
Peace & Light Celebrations (Students)
Students from McDonogh's lower school classes charmed audiences with their annual "Celebrations of Peace and Light."
Holiday Project is a Wrap (Students)
Holiday packages from all over campus were loaded onto trucks and transported to St. Gregory the Great Church in Baltimore on December 19. In addition to personal cars and school vans the Formisano and Sevel families donated trucks and drivers from their businesses to help parents and school staff with the delivery. This year's project aided 453 children and their families.
Alumni Holiday Luncheon (Students)
Alumni gathered on campus for the Annual Holiday Luncheon. At the luncheon they were able to hear remarks from Charlie Britton as well as a performance from the Concert Choir.
All-School Holiday Assembly (Students)
At the All-School Holiday Assembly, a dispirited Joker and his two henchmen, Kawalski and Ricco, attempted to convince the “McGotham” community that the season was all about “the getting and the having.” Luckily Batgirl arrived on a souped-up bike to save the day! She confronted the Joker, making him turn out his sack of purloined presents, and asked him to think about others instead of himself. After listening to performances by the many and varied musical groups in “McGotham,” the Joker received the message that the season is about “joy, not jokes; song, not sneers; giving, not grabbing and getting!”
Holiday Bazaar Fun (Events)
The McDonogh Parents Association sponsored Holiday Bazaar drew a big crowd on Sunday, December 7. Shopping, caroling, games, crafts, and delicious treats were enjoyed by all.
Thanksgiving Breakfast 2008 (Alumni)
Alumni from the classes of 2005-2008 joined the senior class for breakfast on Thanksgiving morning along with Headmaster Britton and various faculty members.

LS Helps Library Without Books (Students)
After learning earlier this fall that an elementary school library in Louisiana was still without books after losing all they had to Hurricane Katrina, the Lower School took action. For five weeks, students donated a combined total of 8,000 books of their own and Ukazoo Books of Towson contributed 10,000 more. On December 4, students filled a U-Haul with the donated books and then waved goodbye to first grade teacher Mary-Catherine Irving and fourth grade teacher Craig Whiteford as they headed to Lousianna to make the delivery. Photos of students unloading the books in Louisiana are compliments of Dinah Rogers from the Times-Picayune and were featured in the newspaper on December 5.

Mingle and Munch (Students)
On December 3, Cleopatra, Thomas Edison, Harriet Tubman, Tutankhamen, Annie Frank, Walt Disney, and Michelle Kwan were among the many well-known people conversing in the lobby of Ceres M. Horn Theatre. Sixth graders portrayed them during Famous People Mingle and Munch, the culminating activity of a cross-curricular biography study.
Myths and Masks (Students)
Fourth graders performed original myths and pourquoi tales for Lower School students, parents, and special guests on November 24 and 25. The students wore colorful masks made from plaster molds of their own faces.
Exhibit Showcases McDonogh (Tuttle Gallery)
An exhibit featuring some of the artwork in "E. Carey Kenney's McDonogh" is on display in the Tuttle Gallery until December 15. An opening reception with the artist, who was head of McDonogh's art department from 1947-1980, was held on November 19.

Boys Soccer Champs (Students)
Top-ranked boys varsity soccer was victorious against Mt. St. Joseph High School on November 10 to win the MIAA conference title. The final score was 6-1.

On November 8, the McDonogh Eagles defeated the Gilman Greyhounds 22 to 14. Three sides of the field blazoned with orange and black after Headmaster Charlie Britton and Upper School History teacher Dave Harley led a spirited parade over the bridge from Bryn Mawr.

Stream Study (Students)
On the morning of October 3, seventh graders headed out of the science lab and into the waters of the Gwynn Falls stream on McDonogh's campus to collect all sorts of information.
Chesapeake Bay Trip (Students)
October 14-16, eighth graders traveled to the shores of the Chesapeake for the annual Bay Trip. Featured activities included canoeing, crabbing, scraping for oysters and sub-aquatic vegetation, night-hiking, and watching the sunrise.
Once Upon a Time Exhibit (Tuttle Gallery)
The first Tuttle Gallery exhibition of the season, "Once Upon a Time," features narrative paintings by Colin Lidston '01 that explore themes of marriage, longing and loss. The exhibit runs September 22 through November 7. An artist's reception was held on Monday, October 20.
American Shakespeare Weekend (Students)
Upper school students traveled to the American Shakespeare Center in VA on October 10 for a weekend of master classes and performances.
Race for the Cure (Events)
The McDonogh Community came out in force October 19 for the 16th annual Komen Maryland Race for the Cure in Hunt Valley.

Members of the McDonogh community in the Washington, DC area gathered for a cocktail reception at District ChopHouse on September 25, 2008. Alumni spanning six decades enjoyed cocktails, conversation, and remarks by Headmaster Charlie Britton. Also in attendance were veteran faculty Dave Harley, Ceil Millar, and Peggy Warner.
Ice Cream for Books (Lower School)
Lower School students coasted down "Slip N Slides" and ran through sprinklers to celebrate meeting their summer reading challenge "Ice Cream for Books." Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston, dressed as an ice cream sundae, and Headmaster Charlie Britton, clad in an ice cream man suit, arrived on the scene in a traditional white ice cream truck to deliver treats to students.The Lower School students read a combined total of 5,123 books to earn this summer fun on a school day. Their goal was 3,500 books.

The 136 members of the Class of 2008 graduated on Friday, June 6.
Athletic Awards Evening (Students)
Recognized in 27 different interscholastic sports, close to 100 student athletes received honors for sportsmanship, leadership, and effort at Athletic Awards Night June 2 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. A record 24 seniors were named Golden Eagles for participation in athletics every season of Upper School. One coach received a posthumous honor. Third grade teacher Vicki McMillan accepted a framed varsity letter in memory of her husband Mike, a longtime baseball and football coach who died in March.
Eighth Grade Closing Ceremony (Students)
The Class of 2012 was officially promoted to the Upper School at the conclusion of the eighth grade closing ceremony held on Childs Memorial Terrace June 3.
Gatorade Player of the Year (Students)
In its third decade of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, The Gatorade Compnay, in partnership with RISE Magazine, announced senior forward Chris A. as its 2007-08 Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year at a press conference held at McDonogh School on June 2.

On May 13 and 14, Mrs. Lewis's second graders took the stage of the Carpenter Outdoor Classroom for the production "Don't Give Up." Directed and written by Mrs. Lewis, the musical was about two people who never stopped trying: Mahatma Gandhi of India and Oney Judge, a slave who belonged to George Washington.

Middle schoolers gathered in Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Friday, May 16, to hear the 11 finalists in the annual seventh and eighth grade oratory program.
Varsity Softball Wins Championship (Students)
The Varsity Softball team won the Independent Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference championship on May 11, with a 5-3 victory over Notre Dame Prep.

Sixth Graders Honor Unsung Heroes (Students)
On May 9, sixth grade students and faculty honored McDonogh's unsung heroes, the maintenance and transportation staff, as part of the Paul T. Spies Community Service Project. The honorees were treated to a special breakfast after the program.
Sophomore Oratory Finals (Students)
Upper schoolers gathered in Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Thursday, May 8 to hear the five finalists in the annual sophomore class oratory competition.
Honors for Ed Kenney (Alumni)
Former art teacher, department chair, and campus artist Ed Kenney was honored with the Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Award at a special ceremony May 2 in Tagart Memorial Chapel.
Reunion Weekend 2008 (Alumni)
Alums returned home on May 2 and 3 to celebrate Reunion Weekend. The 50th reunion class, 1958, celebrated with two parties. The 65th, 1943, enjoyed a lunch at Headmaster Charlie Britton's house. Other classes ending in 3 and 8 enjoyed milestone reunion parties. Popular campus events included a cocktail party and crab feast. Another highlight was the presentation of the Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Award to former art department chair and campus artist Ed Kenney. Alaska resident Harley Clough '43 won the prize for coming the greatest distance; Karl Graf '32 was the oldest alumnus to attend.
Headmaster's Day Ceremony (Students)
The entire school community came together on Thursday, May 1 for the annual Headmaster's Day ceremony. More than 50 upper schoolers received awards. Special tributes were paid to freshman class dean Jim Tsouvalos for 25 years of service; accountant Patti Thomas and third grade teacher Carol Buell for their upcoming retirements, and former headmaster Bob Lamborn, who will turn 90 in July.
Spring Jazz Band Concert (Students)
Those in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Friday, May 2 were treated to a swinging, toe-tapping evening with the jazz band, jazz band II, and the rock band. Guest performer Dave Makowiecki, a professional trumpet player, joined the group for a final number. Band director Don New paid tribute to the graduating seniors, who, in turn, thanked New with a poster-sized memento.
Ultimate Frisbee Triumphs (Athletics)
Competing for only the second year, McDonogh's Ultimate Frisbee team defeated Gilman today by a score of 15-3. The co-ed squad is coached by science teacher James "Doc" Silverman.
Into the Woods (Students)

Arts Adventure Day (Students)
Family and friends joined Lower School students for a day-long celebration of visual arts and music on April 18. Guests enjoyed artwork on display throughout the Lower School and musical programs in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre.
Franco-German Week (Students)
Middle and upper schoolers, along with 26 exchange students from Ferney-Voltaire, France, celebrated languages and cultures during Franco-German Week, April 7 to 11. Among the special events for upper schoolers were a concert, movies, and a hat parade.
Cum Laude Induction (Students)
Top scholars from the junior and senior classes were inducted into McDonogh's chapter of the Cum Laude Society on Thursday, April 17. Lloyd Thacker, executive director of The Education Conservancy, was the keynote speaker.

McDonogh Forever (Students)
McDonogh Forever, an original musical written by faculty members Jon Aaron '72 and Jon Detwiler, delighted audiences in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre April 4 and 5. The show featured a cast of middle schoolers looking back at McDonogh's history after a member of the Class of 1932 landed in their midst.
Pi Day Celebrations (Students)
March 14 was an important day for McDonogh's mathematicians because 3.14 represents the common three-digit approximation for pi. Students in all three divisions celebrated with an assortment of educational and fun pi-related activities.
Lower School Beach Day (Students)
Students enjoyed the annual Beach Day celebration on March 14 with summer dress, ice cream, and a special assembly that ended with the official start of spring break.
Mr. GQ Contest (Students)
Greg Be. '08 was crowned Mr. GQ 2008 on March 13. Seven contestants participated in the annual competition. All proceeds benefit a charity of the winner's choice.
Second Graders Interpret Fables (Students)
Mrs. Hailstone's second grade class converted eight Aesop's fables into rhymes and performed them for an appreciative audience in the Black Box Theatre on March 12.

Multicultural Night Celebration (Students)
"Passport to the World" was the theme of this year's spectacular Multicultural Night on March 7. The celebration included performances in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre, followed by a reception with entertainment and a variety of ethnic dishes in the dining hall.
Prefirst Play (Students)
Through music, movement, and song, prefirst students took their guests on a magic carpet ride around the world, teaching them about Italy, Cuba, Switzerland, Russia, Turkey, and much more.
Symbolic Underground Railroad (Students)
During Black History Month, fourth graders created a trail of railroad ties down the main hallway in Elderkin Hall to symbolize the Underground Railroad. Each of the 300 spikes placed on the ground represented one of the approximately 300 runaway slaves that Harriet Tubman led to freedom. As they held the spikes, students imagined a real person and the struggles they faced. The vivid display offered a valuable history lesson for all lower schoolers.
Second Grade Play (Students)
"Character Matters" was the theme of the performance by second graders on February 28 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. In this fun show, the Big Bad Wolf learned the Golden Rule; Cinderella got help in managing her anger; and Jack and the Giant discovered that their differences are cool!
American Biography Day (Students)
Third graders took the stage of the Ceres M. Horn Theatre as patriots, doctors, athletes, authors, artists, and many others for American Biography Day on February 21.
New York Reception 2008 (Alumni)
Film producers, teachers, plastic surgeons, stay-at-home parents, and financial gurus were among those in NYC who shared something in common - having attended McDonogh.
Happy Feet Fun Run (Students)

100th Day of School (Students)
The Lower School celebrated the 100th day of school with much hoopla and a special visit from Zero the Hero (Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston in disguise) on Thursday, February 21. Prefirst students made crowns, kindergartners and their teachers came to school with 100 items stuck to their clothes, and classes throughout the building enjoyed special snacks and math activities involving the number 100.
The Works of E. Carey Kenney (Teachers)
E. Carey Kenney, a McDonogh faculty member from 1947 through 1980, will be honored by the Alumni Association with a Distinguished Service Award during Alumni Reunion Weekend in a building that was the frequent subject of his considerable talent.
Singing Telegrams (Students)
McDonogh's a capella groups the Gentleman Songsters and the Women of Note capped off "Love Week" at McDonogh by delivering several hundred singing telegrams across campus yesterday. And they still had their voices when it was all over.
Eagles Win MIAA Wrestling Tournament (Students)
The varsity wrestling team won its third consecutive MIAA tournament title on February 9 at Mount St. Joseph School. Wrestlers in 10 of 14 weight classes were champions, giving the Eagles a comfortable win over runner-up Mount St. Joseph.
Andy Motsko Awarded Endowed Chair (Teachers)
Upper School Science Teacher Andy Motsko was awarded the Howard C. "Dutch" Eyth Endowed Teaching Chair on Friday, February 8, 2008.
US Production of ART (Students)
Ruthie G. ’09 directs this drama about the relationship among three friends, which changes when one buys a piece of art.
Black History Assembly (Students)
"Bridging the Gap" was the theme of the Black Awareness Club's black history assembly yesterday in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. The group planned the assembly to bring upper schoolers and teachers together across racial, cultural, and generational lines. The club delivered its key messages in drama, poetry, dance, rap, and song.
Wrestling Wins League Title (Students)
The varsity wrestling team (23-3), ranked 13th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, won the league title on February 1, defeating rival Mt. St. Joe, 39-18.
McDonogh Dances Concert (Students)
More than 50 Upper School dancers gave a dazzling performance at McDonogh Dances on January 26 and 27. These photo essay images nearly do justice to the students' phenomenal, crowd-pleasing dance concert.
First Grade Mardi Gras (Students)
The first grade celebrated Mardi Gras by making beignets, masks, and photo books.
Mathletes Excel in Competition (Students)
The Middle School Mathcounts team placed third at the Chesapeake Chapter competition on February 2. In the individual competition, seventh grader Ben L. placed sixth out of 170 students, which qualifies him for the state competition on March 8.
Girls Win Swimming Championship (Students)
The girls varsity swim team captured its sixth consecutive IAAM Swimming Championship at UMBC's aquatic center on February 3. The girls earned 474 points,winning seven of the meet's 11 events.
Mural of McDonogh's History (Students)
With the help of Middle School art teacher Denise Wolf and Amanda Pellerin, a resident artist from Young Audiences/Arts for Living, seventh graders researched McDonogh's past and created a mosaic tile mural depicting pivital moments in the school's history. The masterpiece was unveiled at the reception for the All-School Art Exhibition on January 24.
Freshman Museum Project (Students)
The Upper School Library looked a lot like a wing of the Smithsonian just before winter break when world history students brought ancient civilizations to life with exhibits that they developed as part of McDonogh’s second annual freshman museum project.
Cover the Cost Benefit Concert (Students)
On Thursday evening, January 10, students and alumni performed a benefit concert titled "Cover the Cost" to help a local inner city organization cover the cost of musical instruments and lessons for families that cannot afford them.

Middle School Geography Bee (Students)
Twenty-seven students competed in the finals of the annual Middle School National Geographic Geography Bee in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Friday, January 11. Contestants from grades five through eight who won in their respective social studies classes were quizzed on their knowledge of U.S., world, scientific, and current events geography. After an hour and a half of difficult questions, Willie P. ’12 was declared the champion. McDonogh's own Alex Trebek, longtime social studies teacher Ted Scocos, was the master of ceremonies. Willie will take a written test to see if he qualifies to compete at the state level.
Famous People Mingle and Munch (Students)
On January 9, sixth-graders turned an ordinary biography project into an extraordinary one. Students, dressed as those they studied, shared life stories with other famous people from all points in history. They munched on doughnuts and juice as they mingled and chatted.
Students' Sculptures Tell Personal Stories (Students)
After studying the works of contemporary ceramic artist Christine Federighi and learning how she used carvings and inscriptions to narrate symbolism, students in Leslie Portney's Sculptural Ceramics course created sculptures that narrate their own personal symbolism.
Celebrations of Peace and Light (Students)
Lower School children of all ages welcomed the season of light with celebrations that highlighted six holidays.

Holiday Project Wrapped-Up (Events)
Holiday packages from all over campus were delivered to St. Gregory the Great Church in Baltimore on December 20. After students and teachers loaded the vehicles, parents and school staff drove the gifts for 150 families to the church.

Citizens of the World Week (Students)
Seventh-graders spent the week after Thanksgiving learning more about what it means to be a global citizen. Through speakers, films, skits, reflection sessions, and participation in O.S. Earth's "Global Simulation" game students focused on issues involving hunger, refugees, human rights, and the environment.

NCAA Signings (Athletics)
Seven seniors recently signed NCAA letters of intent to play sports in top-level college programs. Becky and Destiny signed for basketball, while Carly, Kira, Annie, Rachel and K.C. were recruited for lacrosse. Their parents and coaches participated in the signing ceremony on November 14.
LS Grandparents' Day (Students)
Grandparents visited the Lower School on Tuesday, November 20. They attended classes, student performances in the Horn Theatre, and, in the case of the Kindergarten, a mini Thanksgiving feast.
Fall Champs 2007 (Athletics)

At the Spirit Brunch the following morning, 10 alumni and two coaches were inducted into the Hall or Fame and John Mitchell '57, Marc Blum '60, Ed Novak, and Bill Seal received Alumni Distinguished Service awards.
91st McDonogh - Gilman Game (Students)
Although the Eagles were not victorious (14-21) over the Greyhounds on November 10 in John McDonogh Stadium, orange and black spirit prevailed on campus throughout the day. Prior to the game, fans met in front of the Lower School for a picnic, and from there paraded in grand fashion to the stadium. The Morgan State College Marching Band led the way and also provided half time entertainment.
Spirit Parade and Pep Rally (Students)
In anticipation of the 91st annual McDonogh vs. Gilman football game, the SGA sponsored a pep rally for Upper School students on Thursday evening, November 8. The entire student body continued the celebration on Friday, November 9, with the annual all-school Spirit Parade and Pep Rally.

The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company and the McDonogh Theatre Lab's presented Macbeth on November 2 and 3, 2007.

On Thursday, November 1, fourth graders simulated the annual Punkin Chunkin World Championships held in Delaware with a lesson in aim, force, and trajectory on Chapel Hill.

Environmental science teacher Rob Smoot traveled to Alaska in July 2007 to learn more about its ecosystem and geology.
Race for the Cure (Students)
The McDonogh community came out in force October 14 for the 15th annual Komen Maryland Race for the Cure in Hunt Valley. For the second straight year, McDonogh assembled the largest team and made the largest team donation, more than $47,000 for breast cancer education and research in Maryland.
Founder's Day (Students)
The school community gathered on the morning of October 12 to pay tribute to school founder John McDonogh and all those who have left the McDonogh family. In the afternoon, Middle School students participated in a history walk around campus.
Alumni Exhibit in Tuttle Gallery (Students)

Aztec Two-Step (Students)
Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman of the folk duo Aztec Two-Step visited McDonogh on Friday, October 12. They held a master class in the afternoon, offering critiques and advice to the four brave songwriters who performed for them and a concert that night for the McDonogh community.
Making Boo-Boo Bunnies Together (Students)
Seniors in Jan Kunkel's Calculus class taught Posey Valis's kindergartners how to make boo-boo bunnies from washcloths. It was tough to tell who enjoyed the experience more, the senior teachers or their young pupils. It was Kunkel's idea to depart from routine and connect the two groups.

On Friday, June 8, the 140 members of the Class of 2007 walked proudly behind departing Headmaster Bo Dixon through the chute of applauding faculty, down to Childs Memorial Terrace, and into McDonogh history.

More than eighty upper schoolers received awards last night for participation, service, and outstanding achievement in athletics. A total of 17 seniors earned Golden Eagle awards for participation in a sport during every season of their Upper School careers. Varsity letters also went to coaches Joe Rice and Andy Motsko, coach and former athletic director Jack MacMullan, and Headmaster Bo Dixon and wife Ann.
2007 Stewart Recital (Students)
Seniors Robby F. and Terrell W. entertained their audience with a myriad of performances, including songs in German, French and Spanish, dance numbers, gospel music, and choral conducting.
Three, Two, One, Blast Off (Students)
Fourth graders launched water bottle rockets on Thursday, May 31, after spending several weeks building and testing their creations. Some went high, some went far, and some never left the ground during this annual pre-summer activity.

On May 15 and 16, Mrs. Lewis's second graders and her dog Spencer, playing the part of John Glennco, took the stage of the Carpenter Outdoor Classroom for the production "Moonwalk."
Girls Track Wins IAAM (Students)
The girls track team won its fourth straight league championship on Saturday, May 12 at Calvert Hall, finishing more than 60 points ahead of Seton Keough.
Sixth Grade Triathlon (Students)
After weeks of training during physical education classes, sixth graders ran, swam and biked to the finish line on Friday, May 4. The athletes had a choice of participating as a team member or competing on their own as an Iron Man or Iron Woman. The best part of the race was the tremendous support students showed their classmates along the way.
Dixon Day (Students)
Students, faculty, and staff celebrated "Dixon Day" May 2 in honor of Headmaster Bo Dixon, who will leave McDonogh in June after 15 years. After an all-school picnic, everyone gathered in the quad to pay tribute. On behalf of all-students K-12, emcees Emily and Amanda gave the headmaster a memory jar containing good wishes from each student.

Seventh Grade Time Capsule (Students)
During Reunion Weekend, some members from the Class of 1992 and their English teacher, Kathie Corcoran, returned to campus and met with current seventh graders to share letters that they wrote and buried in a time capsule when they were in seventh grade at McDonogh School 20 years ago. Afterwards, the current seventh graders buried a time capsule containing letters they wrote about life today, with the hope of returning in 20 years to share their experiences with seventh graders in the Class of 2027.

The Lower School celebrated the 100th day of school with much hoopla on Thursday, February 22. First graders made crowns, kindergartners and their teachers came to school with 100 items stuck to their clothes, and classes throughout the building enjoyed special snacks and math activities involving the number 100.

The girls swim team won its fourth straight IAAM Swimming Championship at UMBC's aquatic center yesterday. The girls earned 485 points by swimming personal bests in 26 out of 27 races.

The Dining Hall was rockin' on the evening of January 26 when Middle School Rock Shop bands performed a concert to raise money to build a well for the Mutyangoi School in Kenya.

Art Baskets for the Poor (Students)
Mary Catherine Irving's first grade class filled 72 baskets with art supplies for children served by the House of Ruth and My Sister's Place. Most of the supplies were purchased with money the children earned by doing extra chores at home.

Inspired by the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr., second graders in Kate Hailstone's class expressed their wishes for all people: clean water, food to eat, a home to live in, a good education, a good job, clean air, a friend, peace.

Twenty-five students competed in the finals of the annual Middle School Geography Bee in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Friday, January 5.
Remembering Ceres Horn '86 (Events)
Students remembered scholar, actor, athlete, and "shining star" Ceres M. Horn '86 with a special assembly on January 4, 2007, the 20th anniversary of her death in an Amtrak train crash. Ceres's friends and family, including her mom, Susan, were among those in attendance.
Freshman Museum Project (Students)
The Upper School Library looked a lot like a wing of the Smithsonian just before winter break when freshmen world history students brought ancient civilizations to life with exhibits that they developed as part of McDonogh’s inaugural Museum Project.
Allan in Gingerbread (Students)
Students in a junior U.S. History class constructed a gingerbread replica of the Allan Building, complete with clocktower made of chocolate. After many hours of planning, constructing and decorating, they presented it today to Headmaster Bo Dixon.

On December 13, alumni and their spouses/guests enjoyed a delicious lunch and entertainment from McDonogh's own Gentlemen Songsters and the Women of Note, led by Philip Olsen. The Reverend Tom Bauer '54 offered a blessing, and after many disclaimers, Headmaster Bo Dixon was successful delivered a funny Christmas joke. Thank you to all alumni for spending time on campus!
Mingle and Munch (Students)
Alexander the Great, Mohandas Gandhi, Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Houdini, Mary Cassatt, and Lucille Ball were among the famous people conversing in the lobby of Ceres M. Horn Theatre on December 12. Sixth graders portrayed them during Famous People Mingle and Munch, the culminating activity of a cross-curricular biography study.
Aquatic Center Opening (Events)
The Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr. Aquatic Center opened December 5 with much fanfare. It preceded the boys team's first meet of the season, vs. St. Paul's School.
India Exchange (Students)
Three freshmen from the all-girls Pardadi Pardada Vocational School in Anupshahar, India initiated an exchange program with McDonogh this fall. From October 22-31, the girls and their chaperone, Shahan Jose, learned all about American life. On campus, they attended classes, visited the Lower School, played Cricket with the Cricket Club, answered lots of questions, and offered their handcrafts for sale. Off campus, they saw a vocal music concert at the Meyerhoff, went to services at a Hindu temple, and took a field trip to the Baltimore Zoo.
Holiday Bazaar 2006 (Events)
Shopping, crafts, games, food, and fun were the highlights of the 2006 Holiday Bazaar yesterday in the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center. Organized by the McDonogh Parents Association, the event drew a huge crowd.
Myths and Masks (Students)
Ever wonder why pickles are sour, why bullfrogs croak or why turtles have shells? Fourth graders, wearing colorful masks made from plaster molds of their own faces, answered questions like these in skits that they created and performed for Lower School students, parents, and other special guests in the Ceres M. Swim and water polo team alumni from the last 15 years made a big splash in the new Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr. Aquatic Center last Friday, November 24. They were the first alumni group to see the new facility and its eight-lane, 50-meter pool.
Alumni Thanksgiving Breakfast (Alumni)
The largest turnout ever of college-age alums and seniors gathered in Lamborn Hall for the headmaster's annual Thanksgiving breakfast on November 23. They reunited for a McDonogh family meal and the opportunity to pay tribute to Headmaster Bo Dixon, who is retiring in June 2007. On behalf of all in attendance, members of the Class of 2003 thanked the headmaster by giving him an engraved spatula. The headmaster has spent his last 15 Thanksgiving mornings flipping pancakes for the young alumni.

Young Alumni Picnic (Alumni)
Sunshine, music, and smiles prevailed as McDonogh’s young alums kicked off their summer at the inaugural picnic held on campus on June 20. Alums from the classes of 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and McDonogh’s newest graduates, the Class of 2006, reunited with fellow classmates, faculty, and staff. Headmaster Bo Dixon made an appearance to welcome everyone home.

Lower School Imagination Celebration (Students)
During April, every Lower School student had an art project on display in Elderkin Hall as part of Imagination Celebration. The official opening of the event took place on April 7 with "An Evening with Lower School Arts," when students and their guests had an opportunity to view the Imagination Celebration artwork and enjoy musical performances by The Lower School Choir, The Bell Choir, and The String and Recorder Ensembles.
Cum Laude Society Celebration (Students)
The Upper School community gathered on April 26 to celebrate the induction of 13 seniors and 12 juniors into McDonogh's chapter of the Cum Laude Society, a national honor society recognizing academic achievement.

The MRAC presented Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s innovative musical comedy, Company April 28-30. This is the story of Bobby, a thirty-something single Mannhattanite who surrounds himself with a group of loving, needy, neurotic married friends and the occasional weekend girlfriend.
Chesapeake Dream Premiere (Students)
A colorful cast of bay critters and middle school students took the stage of Ceres M. Horn Theatre for the premiere of the original musical, Chesapeake Dream on Friday April 21. Additional performances are scheduled for Saturday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m. and Tuesday, April 25 at 1:30 p.m.
Dr. Mike Riera Demystified Adolescence for Parents (Students)
Practically every seat was taken in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Monday evening, April 10, when renowned author and parenting correspondent for the CBS Saturday Early Show Dr. Mike Riera took the stage to help parents better understand their teenagers. Mike was available after the program to meet parents and sign copies of his book, Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers.
First Grade "Bugz" Performance (Students)
Every bug imagineable was present for the first grade production of "Bugz." A good time was had by all... even with stink bugs as members of the cast!

John T. was crowned Mr. GQ 2006 on March 24. Nine contestants participated in the annual competition. All proceeds benefit a charity of the winner's choosing.

More than 200 upper schoolers and teachers celebrated Fat Tuesday with a Mardi Gras run after school to benefit the McDonogh 26 community. The Rollins-Luetkemeyer Leaders organized the race, which raised over $600.

The Eighth Notes impressed two sold-out audiences with their New Orleans-style review in the Black Box Theatre on February 3 and 4. They raised more than $230 in donations for Katrina Relief.
MIAA Wrestling Champs (Athletics)
McDonogh and Mt. St. Joseph wrestling traded the #1 ranking all season, until the teams met in a dual meet on February 3 and McDonogh came out on top.
IAAM Swimming Champs (Athletics)
The girls' swim team won the IAAM A Conference championship at UMBC on Sunday, February 5.

A record number of participants (21 foursomes and 3 threesomes) enjoyed lunch, a full round of golf, dinner and prizes. Congratulations to first-place threesome of Joan Harris, Gary Clark '60 and Jim Forestell '60. A big thank-you to the sponsors for supporting the Alumni Association and its future activities. McDonogh girls won the IAAM track championship for the second straight year, while the boys came in second in the MIAA by a slim 3.5 point margin. Both teams competed May 14 at Calvert Hall.

Author Elisa Carbone (Students)
Elisa Carbone, author of Stealing Freedom and Storm Warriors, spoke to fourth graders on April 20 about what was involved in researching and writing these two historical fictions that they had read earlier this year. She also answered students' questions about details from the two books as well as how she had become a published writer. The activity concluded with a book signing by the author.

The varsity boys' soccer team won the MIAA A Conference soccer championship on November 3, defeating Calvert Hall, 3-0.
89th McDonogh-Gilman Game (Athletics)
The 89th annual meeting of the McDonogh-Gilman football teams ended in disappointment for the Eagles. McDonogh led most of the game and was in contention until the clock ran out with Gilman ahead, 28-24. Eagle fans demonstrated fantastic school spirit just the same.

Second-graders celebrated the evolution of American transportation in The Galimoto and the Train, an original musical performance, on March 7 and 8 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. Playing characters both real and fictional, they told the story of how the rail, canal, and road systems got their start.

Seventh-graders spent the week of January 27-31 engaged in a cross-curricular project based on the movie October Sky. On Monday, February 3, they turned a planned rocket launch into a memorial for the astronauts lost on the space shuttle Columbia.

The Lower School embraced the holidays of Diwali, Hanukkah, Eid Al-Fitr, Kwanzaa, and Christmas during their Celebrations of Peace & Light Friday, December 20 in the Ceres M. Horn theatre.
Mingle and Munch (Students)
Great men and women of history were spotted in the McDonogh library on December 18, when the sixth grade held its third annual Famous People Mingle and Munch.
Holiday Assembly (Events)
On Friday, December 13, the McDonogh student body gathered together in the Field House for the annual All-School Holiday Assembly. This year's program featured choral and instrumental music, dancing, and the irrepressible John Grega as Gammy Goblin.

Bay Trip (Students)
"Cold, wet, windy, and wonderful" is how Head of Middle School Darren Ford described the October 28-30 eighth-grade Chesapeake Bay trip. Students and teachers traveled to five different Chesapeake Bay Foundation sites--Port Isobel east and west, Smith Island, Fox Island, and Noonan--to explore and understand the bay ecosystems.
Halloween (Events)
The spirit of Halloween haunted McDonogh today.
Animals and Art (Students)
On Friday, October 25, the first grade celebrated Animals in Art. Students spent two hours engaging in specially planned activities including sculpting eagles out of clay and decorating cartons of tissue paper with animal-print patterns. Parents from each room assisted faculty during the event, which was planned by the first grade team and art department after the unfortunate cancellation of the first grade's annual field trip to the BMA. First-graders not only worked on their own art projects as they rotated through four stations, but also learned how artists portray animals as portraits, symbols, fantasy, and decoration. The lobby was transformed into a museum displaying famous animal artwork on easels and animal sculptures. The first grade artwork is presently displayed outside their classrooms.
Airmen of Note (Students)
The Airmen of Note visited McDonogh on October 10 and led clinics for upper school band members and gave a rousing evening performance.
Golf Classic (Alumni)
On Thursday, October 3, alumni, parents and friends gathered at Piney Branch Golf and Country Club for the annual McDonogh Golf Classic, sponsored by the Alumni Association.
Stream Study (Students)
On the sunny, cool morning of October 8, seventh-graders and their teachers made their way to another kind of classroom, a stream that flows through campus. They took all kinds of measurements, collected samples, and prepared to analyze their findings later in the classroom.
Over the Moon! (Students)
Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston promised her students that she'd jump over the moon if they read 3,000 books over the summer. They did, completing 3,959 books. And she did, soaring over the happy yellow moon on the Ceres M. Horn Theatre stage as 320 lower schoolers and their teachers cheered.
Pin Ceremony (Students)
The juniors are upper class men and women now, after receiving goldtone McDonogh lapel pins during the September 25 Junior Pin Ceremony. Here are scenes from the ceremony and the traditional dinner preceding it.
Apple Fest (Students)
In the spirit of fall, first graders participated in an apple festival. All four first grade classes spent the morning of September 25 engaged in apple math, apple reading, apple art, and apple cooking. Dressed as farmers, the children got to the core of their apple study and had fun at the same time.
