Students have a progression of opportunities to explore the theatre arts. Lower schoolers enjoy acting in classroom and grade-level performances. As middle schoolers, they learn more about the elements of drama and can participate in large-scale productions. Upper schoolers have even more choices: acting in dramas and musicals, working behind the scenes, and directing peers.
In the Upper School, theatre can be whatever a student wants it to be. For students seriously considering theatre as a career path, course offerings range from acting to lighting design. Student actors work under the direction of teachers with extensive professional experience. Those interested in directing may propose a production to the theatre department and direct it using a student cast and crew. Extracurricular performances with the McDonogh Resident Acting Company are open to all students and include productions of dramas, comedies, and musicals from all periods and traditions of the theatre.

The Middle School is the perfect place to explore drama in all its dimensions. On stage and in the classroom, middle schoolers learn the fundamentals of performance and theatre arts. Whether participating in the eighth grade drama course, or performing in extracurricular productions, middle schoolers are encouraged to explore the living art of theatre. Recent productions staged by the Middle School have included Bugsy Malone, Jr., The Music Man, Good News, and Jon Aaron's original musical Chesapeake Dream. As in all areas of the Middle School, the theatre is a place to learn, experiment, and discover the world of theatre.
